I agree that the hyper consumerism promoted by social media is a real problem. People are being taught that they should buy buy buy to make themslves happy.

Libraries definitely need more love as they provide not just books but adult education programs, reference services, photocopying/printing, resume building lessons, and so much more. They’re also a great way to check out a book to see if you like it or not before purchasing your own copy. Spend your money on what you really love instead of buying a bunch of books you’ll never glance at twice.

Much of that depends on how much funding and resources a library has access to. You don’t have to visit the library everyday, but something as simple as signing up for a library card gives libraries the numbers they can present to the city to show that more funding and resources are needed because more people are interested in them.

The problem with ebooks or movie bought through streaming services is they can be erased. If the platform doesn’t want to support it anymore or they no longer have the license, then it doesn’t matter if you bought it, it’s gone.
I agree in supporting libraries but I also agree if you really love a book, movie or tv series; buy the hard copy and take care of it.

The publishing industry and independent bookstores are dying and authors are struggling to earn from writing books. Supporting libraries is important but I don’t think buying books can be compared to buying redundant skincare products that expire.

I have loved having a collection of books since way before I was even on social media. Many of us who love reading books usually like keeping a collection as being able to touch, smell, and read a physical book beats every other form. With libraries you'll not only have to return it but also need to finish the book within a time frame. Many of us also don't have libraries in our area. Plus buying good books = supporting good authors

To be honest, I wouldn’t say buying books is over-consumption, unless you never read. Yes, it's nice to borrow books or find them cheap second hand. I love it. But I also want to support authors by buying their books. Please don’t put creatives that, in many cases, don’t make enough off of their books to make writing their full-time job, on the same level as huge corporations selling made in China crap no one needs just so they can hoard more money.

I will never stop purchasing physical media! When you download a book or movie, you don't really own it. It can disappear at any time. I agree though that going to the library or purchasing a used book is a good thing. There's nothing like holding a real book in your hands!

i do have to warn not to use random glasses for candles. make sure it is the right kind. fire safety is important . once had a neighbor burn their house down due to a candle which used a cheap glass as its vessel. (it was diy from what i was told.) so be careful

I’m gonna be completely honest, buying books is not over consumerism (with the exception of buying a bunch of books you end up never reading, of course). The library is definitely a great place to start - you shouldn’t buy a book unless you like it - there’s also no shame in collecting. I’m pretty proud of my manga collection and I love to see it grow! Again, I would highly recommend reading from a library first, and if you like a book enough that you would reread it, then feel free to buy it!

If you really want a book to buy or have on your shelf, check out secondhand bookstores as well!! Some of them will custom order new releases for you if you ask, and more importantly you could be giving a home to a well loved book ready to find a new home! 😊 Secondhand bookstores are great for finding the best older print books there are- i found my all time favorite book by grabbing one at random from a nearby secondhand book store!
