I have the exact same problem with my 10 year old Yamaha RX-V673. Time for a new one I guess :(
It's a shame that affordable repairs is no longer a thing in a world that needs to look after it's resources.
Thanks for a great video NorCal715

That is why I still love any vintage gears.
Repairable anytime and anywhere without the need of special tools.

Mine just started doing this as well. Pushing Pure Direct does not result in sound, just letting it sit for awhile. Mine is an RX-A750. Nice to know these need to be replaced every 7 years or so, or deal with the warming up problem. What a royal PIA.

Those friggin Ti DTS chips. The biggest plague in the Onkyo AV receivers' HDMI boards and many still believe it's the BGA soldering. Nope, it's the chip itself.

Hi bro, had the same problem with an Onkyo from 2011, I poured flux around the chip and blowed some hot air till flux boiled. I throughly cleaned up and added a thermal aluminum to dissipate heat, plus a fan connected to the +12V rail… still works fine. Other than that, sue Texas Instruments 🤣

I believe my own RX-A720 has started doing this.
Mine takes around 5-10mins to start to hear sound coming out of it. Pure Direct makes no difference on mine though still no sound. Once sound comes out of it it's fine.

I'll either have to leave it on or get rid of it and start the research of finding a similar style amp without these issues.

Thanks for the informative video.

I have two RX-A830's one has the same issue. The other has been going strong since new.
It's definitely a IC issue not a BGA issue etc,
The only fix is a new chip. I did manage to get the software online. To programme it through USB. But getting the chip isn't easy. A authorized dealer near me has them. But refuses to sell to public.
These will be the last Yamaha receivers I'll own. And I'll be avoiding those DSP chips.
We ended up pulling them off the shelf at work. We just had so much comebacks. And the repair was a replacement board which conveniently stopped being available after the warrantees expired.

Reflow is the solution.
Did on my Yamaha RX-A3020. there is 2 identical DSP-chips inside.

Had this problem on my Yamaha 720. It would pop and crackle through the speakers for maybe 5 minutes then work. I got worried about the speakers so I just bought a yamaha A4A. So glad I did. reciever. Anyways I am going to try and fix the 720 just for fun starting with a reflow.

Could be a cold or cracked solder joint on one of the chips pins. Heat expands, cold contracts.

Check the DAC i believe the older ones used the DAC to split / create all the channels to the surround inputs on the amp section. the dsp may only do the effects and give one digital out and one regular direct output however the dsp may have something to do with activating the speaker protection relays, unless it's the processor that controls those, i'm not sure on that one and also check the clock signal with a scope if possible, some suggest changing the crystal. Check small caps around the IC's

Try to reflow the pin, or repeal the chip, and resolder it back. Probably there is maybe micro fracture some where, ether on the track or on the bond wire inside the chip.

Why bin it? For stereo it sounds great in pure direct. I have a few different Aventage receivers and if i had this on one id just put it on a 2-channel setup and always use pure direct.

My new/secondhand Yamaha 3060 I recently installed has started to intermittently cut out when playing CDs and I wonder if this is why as it only seems to happen shortly after starting to play. It plays fine mostly but suddenly stops for 2-4 seconds (shows "Decoder Off") then resumes. Most annoying.

Bro teac 8800 av receiver only front lift right chanels not sound bro centre back sorrounding good work what a problem???

It's such a large package and i wonder if the (significant) thermal expansion/contraction cycles of a typical class ab receiver get mechanically amplified through the large area chip package, and eventually stress fracture the die (or its pin wire bindings) .

Is the dsp chip in a RX-V863 the same or possible use as a substitute for the RX-A3020?
