At ReDriven, we’ll be taking you through the pros and cons of a huge range of used cars to see how well they’re going now that they’re a few years old, have thousands of kilometres on the clock, and are coming toward the end of their warranty, or maybe don’t have one at all.

Plus, thanks to our resident mechanic, Jim, you’ll find out what commonly goes wrong with them and what might need to be fixed.

Most importantly, we want to make ReDriven a voice for the most in-the-know used car experts there are...you guys.. See, you’re the ones that actually buy, live with, love and sometimes unfortunately hate the cars we’ll be reviewing.

So we want to hear your thoughts. Hit us up in the comments, or on Instagram and Facebook.

We’d love nothing more than for you to give us as much feedback as possible, so we can make this channel the best it can be.

I have this weird fantasy of owning one of these one day and reversing at the pick up parking at Ikea and loading the boot with cupboards and chairs that I bought.

Have owned one of each generation long term, never had an issue. A couple of recalls that were communicated early and fixed at service. Great cars.

"...it might look fabulous on the outside like some of my exes, inside there are some issues going on."

I felt that.

27min run time, basically Jim needs his own youtube channel as supporting information 😅

That’s exactly the reason why I waited for 8 years before I finally bought one - brand new. Fingers crossed all major issues are address by Volvo by now.

Adam likes Volvos and therefore is a man of culture!

Amazingly stylish and comfortable seems to be the theme for Volvos. I've had an NA 850 and Mk1 S40 years ago, and they were lovely but had a list of issues (electricals, engine). That said, though, these newer cars are on another level of hell.

I may say this as a Volvo fan, but if they made more reliable cars, they'd be the best carmaker out there.

I've never seen one in that blue before - that is stunning.
I had a Volvo V70 wagon many moons ago - I bought it used and well past its prime but I loved it, but as it aged, parts were horrendously expensive and i regretted not buying something Japanese

Love this car, but I had to make sure I sell it before the warranty runs out.
For the 54 months I had it, it had the following replaced under warranty:
1. Steering wheel electronic
2. Oxygen sensor
3. Engine mount
4. Seat heater
5. Rear cup holder

And the following considered consumables:
1. One set of front brake pads and discs
2. Two sets of rear brake pads and discs
3. Both batteries

I might also add that the stop start never worked well for me which forces me to stop quite abruptly so the engine doesn’t come back to life again. The suspension roughness mentioned in this video is also accurate.

But both of these issues appear to have been rectified in later revision when I drove a MY19 loaner with larger wheels.

2017 Volvo T8 no issues until 104, 000 miles and then needed an ERAD which was replaced under warranty. The sunroof is a bit slow apart from that been great no issues whatsoever with full service history.

Great video full of awesome technical knowledge especially at the end. I didn’t know that many things could go wrong with the car.

got a 2016 XC90 D5 inscription, the few years that I had it, warranty paid out almost half value of the cars in unbelievable I love it when its working though. Going to drive it until its dead.... which could be any day now.... sitting at 178k km right now.

Welp. That was heartbreaking. The “what goes wrong” part was like learning your crush doesn’t like you back. You felt it was probably that way, but you wished it was not.😢😅😊

Love the look of these but the older ones are the ones to get for reliability… I’ve had two old school 1990s 5 cylinders are they were bulletproof (still have one and it’s been brilliant and way more reliable than my dads new Merc) - new ones with all the complexity scare me 😅

You got my attention with the Tomas Hake-esk poly drumming 🤘
I also grew up in Umeå and we all lugged around our music equipment in 145 or 245 Volvos.
I know exactly what you are saying about the brand and more over owning a XC90, nice but risky sometimes.
They are very nice work horses with the best comfort out there.
Buy a nice 240 station wagon instead, and the money you save you can buy a nice kick drum pedal.

excellent video as per always!

I've got my18 xc60 d5 and is very similar to the 90, I did awful lot of research before buying. I have been fortunate to buy a good one according to 2 mechanic's with currently 96k. no issues so far.
confirm the brakes are strange at times, like you said - they also are notorious for eating rotors and pads, like 40-60k km
the air suspension is great and gets a 8/10, the voice controls is woeful use your fone.
couple of squeeks coming from the dash is about it really.

biggest concern is the manufacture of these cars Belgium vs china, lots of QA, brake, electrical issues in the China made ones, fuel filler so choose wisely and get a 2nd gen xc90

forgot to add that's all the bad ^ everything else is really good, comfortable, great fuel economy 1100km long range 850 short range, decent transmission - hardly any hunting for gears, tidy interior, the self driving mode is best in class better than my tesla! for a 5 yr old car! plenty of tech + list goes on. drive one 😊

Yeah I bought one, my 3rd Volvo, 2nd XC90. I am biased but I do love it. Went diesel, fingers crossed it’s been looked after Mechanicaly as well as it has on the outside. Thanks for the thorough review

Love this in depth review. Was contemplating this or the Toyota Grand highlander. The 20 min mark made my decision. Liked and subscribed!

10 years ago, if you said the benchmark for ride and handling are Kia and Hyundai… people would have laughed at you.

How times change.
