On the Wrist, from off the Cuff: Seiko Prospex – 'Baby' Alpinist SPB159; 38mm, 200m WR, AR Sapphire

On this episode we take an in depth look at another outstanding and highly anticipated 2020 release from the brand Seiko. This new SPB159 (SBDC119) compass bezel-less model actually returns to the more basic format of the original Seiko Laurel Alpinist of the late 50's & Seiko Champion Alpinist of the early 60's. While in no way a reissue, this new Alpinist actually blends design elements from Seiko's more recent mainstream Alpinist offerings and packages them in a modest 38mm case with design cues that scream retro/vintage aesthetic, while still absolutely being ultimately capable of 'walking-the-walk' retaining their 20 ATM water resistance staple. So much so, that I couldn't resist paring this gradated tropical-like dial with an Uncle Seiko Topic-style rubber strap. When I first saw the renderings, I thought this release would be popular sure, but ultimately a bit more niche. After handling this one in the metal though, I have to say that I could see this one easily being a more mainstream hit due to its overall versatility, as well as it really just hitting a market well primed for a release like this. This Alpinist just hits so many of the right notes for me, I can't help but imagine it becoming another cult classic in the space. Let me know what you all think in the comments below, thanks guys!

This may not look anything special if you have average wrists but for guys like me with smaller wrists this is an incredible addition. Display case back, 20 bar WR, sub-40mm case, this checks a lot of the boxes of the Sinn 556 and will be undoubtedly a lot more affordable. It’s also less Spartan, with a degree of warmth to it. Great work Average Bros for highlighting this little gem. Will definitely check this one out.

I picked up this watch today. Got it for $625 and was feeling a bit of buyer's remorse. Your review of this product was the best that I have seen. You reminded me of why I chose this watch. It's attractive but inconspicuous at the same time. Thanks

I agree, the tropic strap really flatters it. Rock it.

My favorite recent Seiko release. With this exact charcoal degradé dial variation, my favorite of the 3 released.

Just bought this one today, and also ordered a tropical strap. Meaning, I think you are 200% matching my taste :) and having now finally the perfect every day wear, elegant plus sporty watch. Big adoration for this watch, and video well done as well! Happy days.

I really like how they blacked out the Seiko logo.
Super stylish watch, I think they nailed it.

In regards to the leather oem strap, I’d say to anyone who isn’t sure about the leather... not to judge too early. Once it’s broken in a bit it’s great. Don’t forget guys, all the best leather can take time to break in. The best leather boots I have felt very uncomfortable initially. For me, breaking in new leather is like making that thing your own. I’m really impressed with the strap. I even bought the oem bracelet that comes on the green dial and I haven’t yet used it.

That may be the perfect field watch. I love the compass and all but I'd be just as happy without it. The dial is fantastic. the size is perfect. Wow! Now to find it at a good price.

Great watch! I am a Seiko fan and wanted a non-divers watch, I have the SPB077, SPB143, SPB153. I bought a tropic strap, but didnt like it on any of these, so had it laying around, I love it on this watch though, so much more comfortable and light, and looks amazing!

Probably my most favorite seiko in a long time. It's a straight up oyster case imo, which makes for a classic, timeless look. I prefer it on the oem strap. I just picked up a srpd31 which has the blue lume. The blue lume is very good, charges easy and lasts long. Please, in future reviews, talk about the crown - threading action, winding action, ease of setting. Please!
