Do Crosswalk Buttons Really Work?

They do work but they dont immediately change the light, once you press it the walking sign will activate at an appropriate time when the light turns red, if it has not been pressed the light will remain red like normal without a walking sign.

In Miami, Florida these buttons still work. Their main function is to activate the Pedestrian Crossing signal. It should be noted that these buttons do not affect the timing of the traffic signal. During high traffic volume these buttons only change the status of the Pedestrian Crossing signal when the signal changes for traffic. During low traffic volume these buttons do actually change the traffic signal, but only in an allotted time slot.

Pedestrian push buttons work depending on where you live. In urban communities, like New York City, most signalized intersections are pre-timed to allow ideal traffic flow without interruption. In suburbs and remote areas, where traffic patterns vary during the day, pedestrian signals typically rest on the illuminated hand until someone pushes a nearby button. They are, in turn, functional with vehicular actuation that is the same concept. If someone approaches an intersection to wait for a green light, a detector, whether it is a loop in the pavement, camera, etc., will send a call to the controller.

Actually they Do work. I noticed that if you don't press the button, the traffic lights will go through a normal green/yellow/red cycle witch keeps repeating itself. But then, when you press the button, the next green/yellow/red cycle the traffic lights go through activates the walk signal on the red light. So this video is false and does not provide any logical information.

Actually some intersections in Chattanooga do still have working buttons. To activate the pedestrian signal you must push the button, wait for the walk phase, and cross. The walk sign will not show unless you push the button. But this is only on certain intersections there.

Where I live, most of the buttons that don’t have a function don’t even exist. There are a few (very few) pointless crosswalk activation buttons, though.

Where I live these buttons just make the cross walk light to change when the traffic light is green in that direction, so really they are redundant and dangerous when the buttons don't function properly. Sometimes you can wait forever at certain intersections and the cross walk light will never change.

They do work. There not supposed to stop traffic right away. If you notice it just makes it so your able to walk and makes people aware of turns. Otherwise you'd just be walking through a red hand

Except pedestrians are on their feet and in the element and so deserve the ability to have priority right of way 🤦. Seriously car centric USA?
Traffic flow should be improved by smarter traffic lights and not treating pedestrians so disrespectfully by fooling them.

in wellington newzealand they work if you just stand there it doesn't do anything you have to press it to engage the crossing light

Yes the buttons work, even if the buttons aren't connected to anything they still work.

Technically there is a code in the crosswalk button that allows you to change the lights in your favor all you have to do is find the button that allows you to cross the street & enter the code 3 short pushes, 2 long pushes, 1 short push, 2 long pushes, & 3 short pushes
