A few years ago I had the joy of watching a pair of chickadees build a nest just outside the window of my family room. I could watch their busy preparation from just a few inches away! I came to love them so much! Thanks for this happy reminder of the amazing lives of these tiny friends!

A chickadees-in-winter story. About 20 years ago I lived half a block from the Royal Botanical Gardens (Hamilton, ON, Canada). One Saturday morning in January they were forecasting 'the winter storm of the century' (?!), so I cross-country skied into the depths of the silent, winter forest to enjoy the snow trails before the big storm hit us that afternoon. . Deep In the forest, where the storm winds couldn't reach I was suddenly surrounded by several dozen chickadees, all peeping softly. I was afraid they might be upset because I brought no feed, (... our kind birdner neighbours feed them ...) but no---they just peeped away and watched me. No one scolded me. I'll never forget their perky attitudes and sweet wee voices under that dark sky.

I love Chickadees and their relatives, the Titmice.
I live in CT and hear Black-capped Chickadees and Tufted Titmice year round. They don't start becoming more vocal and noisy until late February and early March. My favorite hobby is fishing, and during that time period at ponds with plenty of trees and brush, those 2 birds are very active and noisy, and they get right near me as I stand and cast. Right outside my apartment's bedroom window is a dogwood tree that I hear those 2 birds singing from during the morning hours in the spring.
I enjoy watching videos of Titmice shooing other birds off and trying to get squirrels to leave feeders. A YouTube channel that hasn't had life in a few years now has plenty of videos of Tufted Titmice showing how smart, brave, curious, and aggressive they are.
An interesting fact I've read is that the Tit family is the third smartest bird family in the world, after Corvids and Parrots and Parakeets.

I love the Carolina Chickadees here. They flock with the Tuffed Titmouse. They are both so adorable and real characters! I’m in middle Tennessee, btw.
