Rachmaninoff - Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini, Op. 43

Rachmaninoff, wizard of the piano, meets Paganini, wizard of the violin. The result: the notoriously difficult Rhapsody — 24 variations on the 24th of Paganini’s Caprices — encompassing everything from knuckle-busting runs to the terrifying Day of Wrath medieval chant and the swoon-worthy 18th variation. In the summer of 1934 Rachmaninoff composed the ‘Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini’ at his summer home, the Villa Senar in Switzerland. It’s a concertante work written by for piano and orchestra, closely resembling a piano concerto in a single movement.

The 18-th Variation is probably one of the most beautiful and inspiring themes ever written by Sergei Rachmaninoff. It was featured in the movie "Somewhere in Time" and in many other productions.
