Rachmaninoff playing his concertos is a model of severity, power and expressive subtlety. The Philadelphia Orchestra responds to Rachmaninoff's lapidary and majestic playing with a soaring, voluptuous and mysterious sound. The ghostly slow movement is an example of the perfect osmosis between conductor and pianist. These documents are indispensable and it is not acceptable to love Rachmaninoff's concertos without having heard them by their author.

Rachmaninoff playing his own music.. There are no words..

My grandfather was an impresario in Cincinnati, and he and Rachmaninoff were friends. I identify deeply with Rachmaninoff's music, and have always thought I must have inherited from my grandfather the commonality of spirit he and Rachmaninoff shared. It is always wonderful to hear R performing his own music.

My mother heard Rachmaninoff play in Liverpool, when she was a schoolgirl, round about 1930. The concert had to be held in a cinema, as the Philharmonic Hall was not large enough to accommodate all who wanted to go.

He lived near my place, not far, in a villa at Lake Lucerne. Even these old recordings carry his character, his intenseness, his strength, his delicacy. He created another space for musical expressions, he expanded his personal universe. We all live in our own, but he was reaching out.

If there was ever music dictated directly from God, it’s that exquisite chord progression at the end of the second movement of piano concerto #2. Brings tears to my eyes and joy to my soul every time. And what an honor to hear the composer performing his own. A million thanks to whoever posted this.

It was 66 years ago at the age of 9 that I first heard Rachmaninov's concerto #3 on an LP. I was at my grandmother's home when she put it on the Hi-Fi. Being a piano teacher she played all manner of music from the classics to jazz. From then on when I'd visit her I'd play it endlessly. To this day it brings a tear to my eye when I hear it. His 2nd concerto is no less moving. I used to tell my grandmother that if I ever became a composer I'd have to write music that sounded like that of Rachmaninov. Well of course that didn't happen.

We are very lucky that the birth of recording technologies overlapped with his performing live. There is a sense of urgency with which he plays n.2 that I haven’t heard in other pianists performances.

I have heard many play these wonderful gems but it is a moving experience to have Sergey himself in our home. My sincere thanks to all concerned for making this possible.

That's how a piano piece should be played! Clean, precise, perfectly intelligible, note by note, chord by chord!

Thank you so much for sharing these historic and amazing performances. While many of these concerti figure prominently in the repertoire of modern pianists, Rachmaninoff's uncanny ability to bring us into his universe of lyricism and virtuosity is truly unparalleled.
