Ryobi 40 volt battery reset.

I had 2 batteries with 2 different problems. One was dead and wouldn't charge. The other was fully charged but wouldn't run any tools. This simple reset process fixed both issues. It's an easy fix, no extra power supplies or voltage regulators like I had seen in other videos. I hope this helps someone else. Just be careful. These lithium batteries can explode like a plasma cutter.

Update: One of the two batteries wouldn't charge again. I tied this same process and it didn't work. I guess they don't last forever..........

This worked like a charm. I made a warranty claim on the battery today, free replacement, then sat down with my T10 bit and opened that case up. My battery model has two small holes next to each other with RST printed nearby. I tried jumping with a flat head screwdriver with no effect. I happened to have a twist tie on my table, peeled off paper on two ends, and stuck those wire ends in the reset holes. Four green lights turn on solid, remove the twist tie jumper, push the battery test - one green light. Put it on the charger and it's happy as a clam. Now I'll have TWO 40v batteries ! BTW, my failed one was factory reconditioned. I don't think it was wrong to make the warranty claim and then fix the failed battery.

Hey Jeff -- a big thank you. My battery was flashing defective. I watched several videos -- one more complicated than the last -- then I watched yours. I was so excited to try it. My 40v battery was already opened, so I grabbed a paper clip (any wire will work) and used it to jump the 2 points you described (reset and 3v) and, in 3 seconds, my battery flashed green once. I reassembled it, then put it back in the charger and it came back to life. It is now getting a full charge. Awesome piece of information. Thank you. You just made the world a little bit better.

Finally a video with the same battery board as my battery. Every other video was a different board. I was going crazy. Thanks for this video

Thank you so much for showing this on an older battery. I couldn't find the reset on my older Ryobi until you showed this. Been looking at all the vids but they were all on newer versions...guess mine lasted longer than most.

Nice. I couldn't find the reset button until this video. :-) For me the GND and RST was the key to reset it. Battery is now charging after the mower took it way below charge. Testing it tomorrow!

Amazing! Mine was a totally different layout as well... 3.3V to Reset worked like a charm.

Thank you, friend!

My battery pack had the same problem whereas it was fully charged but wouldn't run my trimmer and no lights when pressing the test switch. My pack was under warranty so Ryobi sent me a new one. I decided to try the reset on the old pack and it worked like a charm. My circuit board is different from yours but I was able to find the very small printed RST holes and jump them with a screwdriver. Thanks for the great tip.

Came across this video by accident. Figured, what the hell. Tried it on a battery I had that wouldn't charge. It worked. Put it in my trimmer and perform like normal. 👍 thanks. Really appreciate it.

Great video. Simple. Mine was a little different but same concept. Found the rst holes and jumped it with a paper clip. All for 5 dollars ( had to buy the bit). Took me less than five minutes.

Thank you so much! I watched other videos and my circuit board was different than all of them. Until I watched your video, I did not know what to do. Thanks for the help.

Thank you so much, all I did is short the RST holes, you’re a life saver. I appreciate you

Didn't exactly work but it gave me just enough of a clue to reset the battery myself. All I did was short the reset "tab" to the tab next to it and it worked, so

Hey Jeff. Tks for vid. Now the update. Took off 4 screws with reg sm, star bit. Separated/Folded back plate (little stiff) like a book (no need to pull off/back touch pad). Took 2 metal scribes, put in "Rst/other hole" then crossed them to make contact. Same time pushed "internal" button (where pad actually hits) & 4 lt's went to one. Put on charger with plates (top/bot) together. Charged up in 2hrs. Put screws back in. Tested like new. Hope this helps others, your's did me a solid...TKS. Ps, didn't have jumper stuff, hence metal scribes.

This worked for me. The lights never flashed during the reset jumper, even when using the status button. When I completed the reset and retried it the battery came out of the frozen state. Now fully charging and works well - Thank You

I have the exact same circuit board on an older battery, a small 1.5 amp hour(I think) from the first model string trimmer in 40v. The motor went bad and faulted the battery. $40 for a new motor and it works great! I did the jumper reset trick and nothing flashed or blinked. But I tested the voltage and it went from 3v to 13v. Put the battery on the charger and it blinked green without showing any error. After a couple minutes I tested the voltage again (literally as I'm typing this message) and the volts went up to almost 15v! I'm going to fully charge it now and I think the battery is fixed as well!
Thanks for the help :)
