Doctor Doom (Dr. Victor von Doom) is a supervillain appearing in American comic books published by Marvel Comics. Created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, the character first appeared in The Fantastic Four #5 (July 1962). In his comic book appearances, Doctor Doom is the monarch of the fictional European country of Latveria whose goal is to bring order to humanity through world conquest. He serves as the archenemy of Reed Richards and the Fantastic Four, though he has also come into conflict with other superheroes in the Marvel Universe, including Spider-Man, Iron Man, Doctor Strange, the Black Panther, the X-Men, and the Avengers. While usually portrayed as a villain, Doom has also been an antihero at times, working with heroes if their goals align and only if it benefits him. Doctor Doom was ranked #4 by Wizard on its list of the 101 Greatest Villains of All Time[8] and #3 on IGN's list of the Top 100 Comic Book Villains of All Time.[9] In a later article, IGN would declare Doom as Marvel's greatest villain.[10]
The character has been substantially adapted from the comics into several forms of media, including television series, video games, and merchandise such as action figures and trading cards. Most notably, Doctor Doom has been portrayed in licensed Fantastic Four live-action feature films by Joseph Culp in Roger Corman's unreleased 1994 film, Julian McMahon in the 2005 film and its 2007 sequel, and Toby Kebbell in the 2015 film.[11] Robert Downey Jr. will portray the character in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) films The Fantastic Four: First Steps (2025), Avengers: Doomsday (2026), and Avengers: Secret Wars (2027).[12][13][14]
Equal parts super-genius and megalomaniac, Victor von Doom better answers to the self-proclaimed moniker of Doctor Doom, the despotic ruler of the Eastern European nation of Latveria. Victor was born in a Romani camp, the son of a witch named Cynthia, who died after making a deal with the demon Mephisto. Swearing revenge, Victor spent his life honing his skills in both science and magic. In his academic youth, Doom was the college rival of Reed Richards, future leader of the Fantastic Four as Mister Fantastic. When left scarred by a machine meant to make contact with his late mother, a disgraced Doom roamed the world until he was taken in by a tribe of Tibetan monks, who helped him forge a suit of armor topped off by an iron mask to hide his face. Rechristened Doctor Doom, Victor returned to his homeland, using his lifetime of skills to seize power as its new ruler.[40][41][42]
Although Doom wishes to bring order and betterment to humanity, he intends to enforce this goal by his own hand and with an iron fist.[43] Ruthless and prideful, Doctor Doom has come into conflict with the super hero community at large, but the Fantastic Four remain his biggest enemies due to Victor's shared history with and personal vendetta against Mister Fantastic, whom he blames for the accident that cost him his face.[44] Victor is not without allies, like his adoptive son Kristoff Vernard,[45] or his personal champion, Victorious.[46] Doom has had several brushes with great power, stealing it from beings such as the Silver Surfer,[47] the Beyonder[48] and the Scarlet Witch.[49] In his greatest triumph, he took the nigh-omnipotence of the Beyonders and reshaped the remains of the destroyed Multiverse into Battleworld, holding supreme power as God Emperor until his ultimate downfall and the restoration of all there was by the hand of Mister Fantastic. In recent times, Doctor Doom proved a key player in stopping a worldwide vampire invasion orchestrated by the ancient evil of Varnae, who plunged the Earth into an endless night by enveloping the planet with Darkforce.[51] Doom helped an incapacitated Doctor Strange to dispel the Darkforce in temporary exchange for the mantle of Sorcerer Supreme.[52] However, Doom refused to give up the mantle following Earth's liberation, seeing that he had much more work to do before he believed the world to be safe in his own eyes.[8]
