The political blueprint for the next Republican president, known as Project 2025, has drawn criticism not only from Democrats but also from Donald Trump himself, who has called the 900-page document "seriously extreme." Yet the authors of the conservative playbook include some of his closest policy advisors, as well as organizations with Christian nationalist leanings. Historian Kristin Kobes Du Mez speaks to Michel Martin about the rise of evangelicalism in politics and the impact it could have on American democracy.

I'm so very grateful that this program and PBS has been covering many of the great threats to US democracy. Keep up the great work.

As a secular person, I found this to be very informative. Sadly, we will have to be vigilant and push back on these extreme idiologies, not only now, but years to come.

It seems Margaret Atwood wasn't too far off. Reality is more bizarre than fiction. Thanks Kristin. Brilliant woman. She is absolutely spot on the mark with this stuff.

It wasn’t a “Christian” America. People fled here for freedom of religion. So they could worship as they chose. there is a separation of church and state according to the constitution

You know how much harassment people would experience. People will not be protected. What a nightmare!

how is this any different from Saudi Arabia, or Iran, or Afghanistan, or Pakistan, or any other theocracy? America is based on Enlightenment thinking, not stone-age authoritarian thinking.

Great insight! I feel similarly to Kristin about faith -- I value mine, but don't want it brought into government in that way. Always appreciate Amanpour & Co. videos.

These people always seem to have a profound problem with the concept of consent.

Christian Nationalism has always been around - different names, i.e., Moral Majority, Tea Party, Families First, etc. Their voice has just been lower level until now with MAGA and Trump. Trump is not a politician. He does not care how the country functions, only that it gives him power. He is a typical heavy handed corporate animal, looking for the most from the least. He saw a golden opportunity with the Christian Nationalists to achieve this status and promoted and used them to the extreme degree that we are seeing today. A great degree if power is now in their hands and we should be aware and alert to how our basic tenets and constitution are vulnerable. Even with Trump gone, this faction will still be a threat.

This is not my definition of Christianity.
There are excellent reasons to keep Church and State separate for the well being of both

Having been in the conservative Christian and the Evangelical movement in the 60-70s, I can see that project 2025 ios the logical conclusion, and find it terrifying.

Oh, my goodness, this was so good for helping me understand more fully what the Christian nationals are trying to accomplish. I am a Christian who loves the Jesus of the bible and Trump scares me so much. This gives me more information on which to base my prayers regarding the election. Thank you so much for this!

These "Christians" have enemies? Didn't Jesus say love your enemies? Pharisees may be gone, but there's no shortage of hypocrites.

The Heritage foundation was founded by Jerry Falwell. It is very much a religious organization.
