"Ha" is the breath of life. Ancient Polynesians would greet each other by breathing into each other's mouths.

The white men that came did not do this. "ole" is without, or no. Ha-Ole = without breath. It actually refers to any foreigner in Hawaii regardless of skin.

It comes from two words. "Ha" the breath of life. "Ole" to have none of. The ancient Hawaiians would touch foreheads and exchange a breath as a greeting. The mainlanders didn't understand the ancients way and wanted nothing to do with it. That is how that works came to be. It's an expressive. Just a little history for you Mr. Fluffy

haole means foreigner. even the pele’s (the goddess of fire) younger sister, hi’iaka was called a haole in a chant about her because they didn’t know who she was back then, therefore, a foreigner.

I lived in Hawaii, and that is..NOT the story.

Haole *IS* duragatory and it means "the breathless" because hawaiians used to greet by going nose to nose and breathing together...

When we came we offered a handshake, they responded 'haole' or "no breath?"

It does not necessarily mean "white". Haole means "foreigner", as in anyone not Native Hawaiian or Polynesian. It's also not a term polite people use.
