Tasker 101 Tutorials: Lesson 12 - Switch to Strongest WiFi Signal on Android

In this lesson we create a profile and task to test the strength of the current WiFi signal and switch to the other one if it's weak. We cover several new topics such as splitting variables, testing text to see if it contains a word or character string, flashing variable info, and reading/writing files. We cover using File Write/Read, Variable Splitting, and Character Pattern Match in this lesson.

Thanks for the nice tutorial

Easiest solution:
Both my routers SSID at home have a common word in their name ("butcher" and "butcher_rep").

1. STOP if %WIFI ~ off    (stop if wifi is disabled)
2. STOP if %WIFII !~ *butcher*  (stop if the wifi name does not match *butcher*, meaning that I am not at home)

Then just correct the GOTO number

So the task stops if the wifi is disabled or if I am not at home ....
Potentially add that the task only fires when the screen is turned on. So it would even drain less battery

Enjoy

Thanks for the info. There are actually several apps on the Play store that would accomplish this themselves, some even better because they can trigger based on current wifi strength then switch to the stronger of your designated alternates. But when you have Tasker, the goal is to have tasker handle as much as possible and avoid too many additional apps taking up ram. I'll have to check out SSID Selector - thanks for the tip and thanks for watching!

Great videos.

SSID Selector with WiFi Widget
Still haven't tried it myself but according to their description this app can choose the strongest signal between all available networks and it also have tasker integration.

Love your videos. Think something like this could be used to switch between 2 APs that use the same SSID?

Thanks for making this video. I used it to customize a profile for what I need. I have an AP on the 2nd floor and one on the 1st floor. So I set mine to beep twice when switching to the upstairs one and beep once when switching to the downstairs one. And i added "Wifi Connected *myssid* " so that it only runs when I'm connected to my access points. (they have similar names)

Thanks a lot, very useful. Like I didn't know about using *asterisk* to match content.

Great set of tutorials, tried others until I found yours, as a novice I find then the easiest to follow. Request! can you please show how to set tasker to change between a routers and three extenders.

Dear frodo,

Having used your advice for all things tasker for years I now find myself hunting the answer to how I use tasker to flash the light surrounding front camera on Samsung S10+ upon recieving a WhatsApp wondering if you may help this child??

Thank you, and thank you for the years of benefit using tasker with your guidance!

So, if you're reading this in 2024 and beyond, Google have removed the ability to control WiFi in tasker, a somewhat hacky solution is to make tasker turn flight mode on and off which will achieve the same thing. I would however add the condition that this only happens if you're not connected to a phone call, otherwise it might happen mid conversation.

Great tutorial. One question though.. Would you mind to explain please what should I do if I have three or more wifi signals to choose from? Thanks!

Is there anyway to revisit this with maybe more wifi signals. I was thinking maybe six, as I have two at home and four at work. I would prefer to stay with the signal with the best strength. Thanks in advance.

You can also add another condition to the Test WiFi profile that make this trigger only if there is an active WiFi connection with Wifi Connected without specifying an SSID.

This is a great tutorial for Tasker if you have multiple access points in your home/office.  My goal is to find the most battery efficient way using Tasker... if I fail I will just write my own app.

For the profile trigger, have you tried with the current version of Tasker use WiFi Near and utilizing the signal strength?  I may test this today to see how that particular module works.

Hi, my device don't support WiFi Connect. Is there any other program that can do the same task? Thank you. Keep doing videos, they're very interesting!

Use wifi near with both networks specified in the conditions for the profile.
