Don't Buy the Nothing Phone (1)...

In today's video we talk about why it may be a good idea to hold off on Nothings Phone (1) until more phones come into play when it's officially launched on Nothings official release date of July 21. The Nothing Phone (1) has had many issues, and to be honest, I don't think it's going to get much better.

I feel like I need to further clarify why I made this video, it seems my original point was sort of lost in the script/ editing & I want to clear the air. - if you watch to the end you'd know I have no ill-will toward Nothing, and I hope that the Nothing Phone (1) is successful. (It appears to be doing good, which is great!). We need more competition in the space, especially when it comes to low/ mid range phones LOOKING GOOD and delivering on performance/ features, it's quite rare. However, the Indian variations of this phone are being manufactured in India, and they don't appear to have the same quality standard, now I originally though this was just a problem with the warehouse/ factory in India, but it appears to be a more widespread issue. I'm sure more videos will come out soon, but if you just take your time to look up keywords like "nothing phone 1 problems" on Twitter, you'd see reports of users who'd received damaged phones, and the replacements they receive are also damaged. I am not saying that EVERY Nothing Phone is going to be problematic, and if you have one, that's great! and I'm jealous. I'd love to have one in my hands to make content. - Anyways, just understand this is a new company, they can't afford to make these mistakes, and if it gets worse, it's not going to do good for them.

Yesterday I saw your video and then I was a bit scary. Today my Nothing Phone 1 came by post and after a couple of hours copying data and apps from my old Phone (Samsung Galaxy Note 10+), I must say, that worrying was not necessary. No pixel errors so far, no wrong colour bands on the display. The Glymph is cool, it feels good it the hand. I am happy. I never liked the rounded Display from my Note 10+. Even tough it is now a midrange phone and not a flagship anymore like my old one in 2019, it is more than fine for me. If there will be issues in the future I will send it back to Amazon. But after the first hours no complaint from my side.

I was also kind of afraid after I pre-ordered it, I watched videos such as yours and others that said it was a "bad" phone. After I got this phone and used it in my hands, there were no glitches, no dead pixels, no erased data, not a hitch. The user experience is amazing, the phone feels amazing to hold (and yes, it obviously stole apples design but so what? other phone companies have copied apples designs before), and at least for me, the lights are actually useful for recognizing calls, notification alerts and battery charging indicator (I guess you could just flip the phone around and see who's calling or find out how much your phone is charged but I guess thats what's a little special about nothing hey?). I'm a student and I have never bought phones over $500, this has got to be the best mid range phone that I have ever used.

I have received Nothing phone 1 on 15th of July, I have seen a lot of comparison videos on YouTube but here are my thoughts about this phone.
1. The in hand feel of the phone is just amazing, you will love it.
2. The haptics of the phone are far better than many I have experienced so far.
3. Though there are few bugs here and there but also they are fixing them with updates and it is now working fine, it feels well polished, the user experience is really good.
The phone is really fast even if we compare it with the phones having better chipset nothing phone is so well optamised that it feels on par with the comparision.
4. Camera performance is really great and after the update it is even better.
5. Battery backup is good and it lasts a full day with 20-30% juice left.
6. Yes Glyph interface is just a gimmic and has no use so far.

I think on paper it seems like an average Android smartphone with better looks but after holding it in hand and using it it will really feel worthy of the amount it comes in.

To me its not about the specs, while i agree that the lights are a completely useless gimmick, they copied the iphone design elements that make it look premium(uniform bezels, actual glass back, metal sides), but at a midrange price point, whilst keeping a pretty clean and minimal android install (to me that's probably the best feature), it might not have the best specs for the price, but hopefully they will optimize the os to compensate for it.

I ordered the phone after reviews came out, the design is cool and while the lights are gimmicky, they are like an extra bonus which could be useful occasionally. The specs are decent and while you can get better for the price, the phone has some rarer features like wireless charging at the price point. In the end the premium no chin build, wireless charging and near stock version of android make the phone a great option for the price more me.

My only concern is the quality control, I don’t know how common the dead pixels and moisture build up problems are. The Nothing phone should have also come with a charger in the box.

IDK man, id say, they did pretty much everything right.

True, you going to be some how a tester for a new company, but you should not forget, that you obviously get a replacement for dead pixels and so on.

Also comparing the Moto edge with the nothing, you conveniently not mention, that the nothing has wireless charging and reverse charging, which the edge hast not, also the nothing has a glas back, a bigger battery and a under display fingerprint sensor.
Id say thats pretty reasonable for 50 bucks more.

I love mine. And the glyphs have a function. When face down on a table, you get a little silent blink when you recieve a message - i like that.

As far as i understand, Nothing does not want to be full of features, but more like a "it just works" phone. Like the symmetry of the bezels, not some gimmicky cameras and so on. So lets give them time and see how the experience is.

Rule no.1 regarding the purchase of any comercial product: DO NOT, DO NOT, DO NOT BUY it in the first batch of sales. Cars, phones, cameras, house appliances, electronical devices, any type of gadgets, which involves a specific tehnological and digital mechanism (or analogic). Same goes for vaccines, medical drugs or even fragrances, cosmetics and other cosmetics. The first batch of sale (which usually reflects the first 3-6 months of product on sale) is the trial-test, the unofficial testing of the product in the market, under the consumer's use and eye and every fault or possible fault is detected and improved in the later updated release which is most likely still unofficial. So the perfect time to buy a product is after the first 6 to 8 months of the product's release depending on how the sales volume go. Also very good video. I've just found the channel. Like the content. Subscribing.

I'm in Nothings Discord Group & the phone has many issues. I almost got 1 to test out here in the States for Nothing, but the phone 1 will not work on all large carriers here in the US.
It only works with lte, etc. You are correct, this phone is packed with issue's

I have the phone. It is real good for the price. You can get similar phones or a little cheaper with similar or slightly better specs. But I think the phone feels really premium. One big objection I have on your thoughts..Which is better to get a software support from? A company which has hundreds of models or only one?

Yeah I also don't understand the hype. It's a 300$ phone with a slightly better camera. But everyones brain got tricked because of the lights on the back....

Finally a video that properly shoes the flaws of the nothing phone instead of just hopping on the hype. It's just a very average phone with LEDs on the back. Something like the Poco x4 gt just blows it out of the water.

Instant sub. This isn’t conformation bias. It will either end up like the Pixel 6 Pro on being the most overhyped phone of its consecutive year with terrible quality issues in software, and don’t even get me started on the dropping calls that a few Google apologists on Twitter (I want to name call, but I’m not trying to dunk on anyone…) will say that this is the best thing since sliced bread *OR* this would succeed. What does this phone bring to the table? Carl is actually pretty cool and I gave him praise for starting out, but I think tech YouTube let’s just be realistic instead of trying to justify the chipset on being this bad. Even the iPhone SE, a big abomination to the market. If Carl Pei didn’t have good relationship with tech media and YouTubers, this would not have been getting any coverage and this would probably drop faster than the big hype train the Essential phone got. This video got me thinking long and hard, “is this really worth my time and energy”. I may not be the most rational person in the shed because I’m just a Apple user that is intrigued by Android OEMs and its phones but I’m sticking with the iPhone until something really innovative catches my eye (like S22 Ultra or Z Fold or Flip 3). I know this is so long but I needed to get this off my chest somehow…

The only thing this phone has going for it over and above every other mid-range phone is wireless charging

Remember the Essential phone? Great stock Android but priced too high out of the box. Loved the phone. This reminds me of it. We will see where this goes.

Saw the video few minutes ago. Agree with the most of the aspects presented. For me the best phone should have:
- Reliable hardware
- Flagship specs
- Clean Android (no bloatware) only playstore is enough for me I can download the rest of google staff and other apps from there if I need
- Not overpriced like most today high end phones.

But no one will make a phone free of bloatware and with flagship specs. It will run smooth for 5 years or more. Most phone companies will slow down / reduce battery life via software updates to force you buy the latest model every year.

Nothing is still a startup company and for their first phone they didn’t do a bad job. Phone 1 was just the first hopefully phone 2 would be amazing.
