day in the life as a clinical laboratory technologist | educational VLOG

Hello! I am a clinical laboratory technologist working in a hospital in a genomics/cytogenetics cancer lab, specifically the FISH lab. I work evening shift (3PM-1:30AM) and wanted to bring you along for the ride. The day I filmed was pretty diverse in what I was doing so I hope this video gives you an idea of what it is like to be a clinical lab tech.

Let me know if you have any questions.

Awesome! I finished my B.S. in biomedical science last April and now I’m in a categorical MLS program to become a technologist in Microbiology. Thank you for sharing this!

Yay FISH! I do this for a living and I’m a supervisor in my lab. We only do FFPE FISH in my lab. Awesome to see another FISH tech

I'm starting as a molecular technologist in a week and I'm extremely nervous. I love your video, it's helping me keep calm!

This is so relatable! Especially the food stuff. Late night spicy potato tacos after work are my weakness! And so are the breakroom snacks. I'm working on it. 😅

This is actually a great video (content and editing)! A lot of the 'day in the life' videos are very general or simply inaccurate bs. Looks like a great place to work, very chill -- much different than your run of the mill technologist with STAT tests, phone calls, alarms going off (e.g. blood culture machine) etc.! I did always have a feeling the FISH folks (we called them molecular folks) had the chillest job! 😂

Hello 🙂 I am very interested in studying to become a Medical Laboratory Scientist but I would love to know what positions I should apply to with no experience while I’m still in school. I am a major introvert so the less patient interaction the better.

I’ve considered phlebotomy but you have to have constant face-to-face interaction with the patients.

I understand that I would need to interact with my fellow colleagues as well as the nurses and doctors frequently but at least I won’t have to be “on” and make small chit chat too much. I’d just like to know which path to take in order to get the most relevant experience - for example:

~ Medication Technician -> Pharmacy Technician -> Pharmacist

~ Sterile Processing Technician -> Surgical Technologist

The only entry level position that’s relevant to MLS that I can think of is phlebotomist -> Medical Laboratory Technician -> Medical Laboratory Scientist

Any suggestions or advice is very much appreciated!Thank you

Can you do a video on how you studied and got good grades in the program? Like how long classes were and what you would do outside of class study wise.?

Just found your channel and subbed! I am thinking about applying. I was going to do nursing school but after 6 months as a CNA, I realized I am not crazy about direct patient care. Too many times have I been cussed at, punched, kicked, thrown feces at from patients.
I still want to help people but not as close

That was so beautiful, in my country lab workers can either be technologists or even medical doctors in a biology residency program, I'm hoping to be the latter, as I'm takin the exam in 2 months from now, wish me luck
God bless you all
