Homemade Cleaning Solution Recipe:
2 cups hot water
1 cup white vinegar
2 teaspoons baking soda
2 teaspoons dish soap

Chemist here. The vinegar will react with the baking soda and produce salt (sodium acetate and water). It’s best in that case to just use the vinegar then (bc the baking soda used will be all used up as a limiting reagent) and some soap. I hope that’s helpful…. OR you can sprinkle the surface lightly with baking soda and use the vinegar/soap solution so it bubbles up and loosens the dirt on contact

Doesn’t vinegar react with baking soda to create water and carbon dioxide? Maybe the reason you don’t smell the vinegar is because it chemically reacts with the baking soda and is no longer vinegar.

Nope. As many have (correctly) pointed out that while mixing baking soda and vinegar makes a fun fizziness that seems magical, what uoure doing is neutralizing the cleaning power of each and creating carbon dioxide (whixh escapes) and salt water. Baking soda is abrasive and good for scouring. Vinegar is aciding and dissloves grease well. Baking soda is a base and vinegar is an acid. Together they don't make a magical cleaning combo, they fizzle our and become useless.

Sodium acetate is an ingredient in many laundry detergents.
Further, any grease-cutting the vinegar loses is replaced by the dish soap.
When the vinegar is naturalized, the smell should be minimal. And the vinegar will not be entirely neutralized, anyway.

After reading all of this, I am as unsure as ever. I also really dislike the smell of vinegar. Surely there is something else I can use that will dissolve grease & pick up dirt?

Probably better to put the DIY cleaner in a spray bottle, and plain water in the Bissell.

I tried it but due yo excessive vinegar baking reaction and bubbling, I lost half of my solution. Any recommendations to avoid that? Otherwise it worked like magic

Started to use this on my stairs and it was working great but then I realized my house will probably smell like the combo for a long time so I stopped 😢

If sudsing is the main concern for the machine, why can't people use dishwasher detergent or HE detergent as both has little sudsing?

The Castile soap literally says don’t mix with vinegar

it's way too much dish soap. my car seats ended up with so much soap, i couldnt even get it all out.

Can’t recommend this solution :( i followed the ingredients but it completely destroyed my couch.
- my completely couch stinks like vinegar now and I have to get rid of it now with soda
- the dirty stains didn’t go out
- I have now big stains everywhere where I’ve put the solution

There is one pro:
It really sucked out dirt out of my couch and the water I poured out was grey, but honestly I think even plain water would’ve achieved that…

Are you sure it doesn't mess with the machine? I just ordered it and I like vinegar as a cleaner. But Bissell says to only use Bissell cleaners. Is that just marketing? Or will the homemade cleaning solution deteriorate the machine.
