Complex Power is one of the most misundersotod concepts in the power industry. Here I show how it is made up of two components - real power and reactive power. But what are these two components? I take a visual approach in these video to demonstrate the key concepts.

Also, idealized in the analysis is the harmonic purity of the voltage source as presented at the load. In power distribution you will most often find that the AC load will have a source which will have a certain amount of harmonic distortion (a distorted sinewave). If the load was purely resistive the current should have the same amount of harmonic distortion as the voltage. In other words, the Total Harmonic Distortion (THD) or the voltage and current should track.

For complex power to return to the source, where does this power go? To another load in your house? To your neighbor? To the power transmission network? Back to the power source, the power station generator?

Is power factor (pf) enough to judge the efficiency of power delivery, or is it better to measure THD of both voltage and current?

We have to deal with non-linear components, like bridge rectifiers, as well as reactive effects in arriving at the proper pf.
