Most answers to any specific question about "Do I Need a Permit" is check with your local inspector. Most of the time they will say yes because they want money and the work.

I do all my own electrical in my home and I don't half ass my work. Screw the permit. What I do in my home is my business, I'm not getting a permit to do basic electrical add ons. And I just replaced my garage electrical box from a push button to flip switches. I also ran electric to a mini split Air conditioning unit I installed last month. You think I'm going to inform the town I live in every move I make?? Hell no...

Here in dukes of hap hazard Pa there is no state electrical license but they have been working in it since 1964. Can spend over $850 a year securing or renewing license from various townships. Got nailed years ago while replacing a toggle switch for a friend and no charge. Clown township Forest Gump wrote my trucks license # down and insisted I run to his township building next morning to get an electrical license & permit. Never got either. At one time in Philly did not need a permit to replace a luminare or work under $100 but they make you take an OSHA 10 or if a boss 30 hour class along with proof of vehicle insurance. Told Philly L&I in my 50 years as a sparky never performed electrical work while driving

Wow very helpful details. And for me I’m adding a couple sub panels to our house that we are currently renting but will buy it later. It’s a home I grew up in we moved out of it then recently moved back in. I’m in The DFW area. But I’m curious if I need a permit unless I’d depends on the city. Also I’m curious if electrical work that required a permit was done without one

Can homeowners apply for electrical permit themselves? I'm planning on installing a power inlet and an interlock switch for my portable generator myself. Can I apply for the permit myself or do I need an electrician apply for me?

I reduced two bathroom lights down to one (side by side vanity to above mirror lighting). Removed both side by side boxes, wirenutted the one box which ran to the other and rerouted that box overtop of the mirror. Did I need a permit? Moved it a whole like 2ft.

Why can’t I find a checklist or codes manual for the requirements in wiring my outlets and lights in my basement?

If I'm taking down a ceiling fan and replacing it with a different lighting fixture would I need a permit then? What if I put a ceiling outlet in its place to plus a fixture into?

Is there a way to get around needing a permit if I wish to just run low voltage wiring in my ceiling for (4) LED recessed lights? So long as I'm not running new 14/2 wiring circuits? I already have an LED light above my entryway connected to a dimmer switch, can I just wire up 4 more low draw LEDs on a daisy chain from that junction box? I don't think any of the lights use more than 12W (probably DC between the light and junction box).

I’ve also read that it also varies by state and city.😎
