Why You Aren’t Getting Open Enough At Impact (Quick Fix)

Are you struggling to get open at impact? Are you just not getting open enough? Your trail arm and lower body transition might be the real issue.

In this video, Mike Granato and Shaun Webb of Athletic Motion Golf explain one of the most overlooked causes of poor rotation: your trail arm and trail leg getting stuck during transition. Most golfers try to rotate harder, but the real fix starts earlier—before you even reach impact.

If you're blocking shots, pulling from the top, or feeling "stuck" in the downswing, chances are you're anchoring your trail side. We'll show you how to fix your trail arm and leg transition to open up your swing and finally rotate like the pros.

They Uncover:

🏌🏼 Why your trail arm timing is killing your rotation
🏌🏼 How your trail knee movement affects your hip turn
🏌🏼 The correct halfway-down checkpoint to unlock the proper sequence
🏌🏼 A drill using the AMG Plane Board to sync your trail side and get open

This isn’t just a drill to feel better—it’s a transition fix that helps you free up your body, stay connected, and create a repeatable, powerful downswing.

Timely drop again - I was struggling with getting more open at impact. Shawn made a great comment about knee bend. I tried that earlier today by more knee bend at address that improved my overall posture and swing plane. Waaalaah. With minimal effort, able to effortlessly swing (more on plane) and get into a better (more open) impact position. Keeps these key vids rolling

The Rodney clip immediately adds 50% more credibility to this video. Thanks for another great video. Been struggling to get open my whole life.

Future video request: You have gone into a lot of depth helping us to understand how the trail arm works through the swing recently. How about a deep dive into the lead arm? I'd like to get some clarity on upper arm and lower lead arm rotation through the swing, getting the shoulder off the chin in the downswing, upper and lower latissimus activation, upper arm down and/or off the chest and then reconnection and folding... I've recently discovered that I've focused so much on right arm reconnection, hitting off the right side, right wrist action, etc. that I have completely neglected the left arm. All else being equal my arm power has come completely from my trail arm and my lead arm has been too passive resulting in lead shoulder glued to my chin for too long and poor results. As hard as I tried to "lower the arms" I couldn't quite get there and I'm fairly confident its because of an unintentionally passive lead arm.

Excellent video. I see this often mostly because of improper concepts. But I have had some clients not be able to move that trail knee properly even when everything is in order at delivery because of poor ankle mobility. I send them to my physio and work on ankle mobility and all gets better

Thank you guys, and thanks for the extra drill. Hoping this video was for drills to guide the changes for hanging back/ pirouette also. I don’t try and restrict the trail leg from going forward. At the start of transition I kinda throw the trail hip away from target and the lead foot pirouettes open and then swing down and leads to flippy swing with lots of chunks.
I’m sure my ground force are too much vertical pressure from the trail foot.
I’d love more from the video “How To Shift Weight & Pressure Like A Pro!” And learn how to lighten the trail leg correctly. I’ve been at this for awhile…

Great video guys. I definitely relate to your comments about over rotating the hips in the backswing. Do you have any tips on how to separate the shoulder turn from the hips? I'm not doing it deliberately but as soon as I turn my shoulders my hips then follow!

Interesting stuff! A request for a future video:
I've seen the golf swing compared to a sidearm throw with the trail hand. Would love to see a video where the camera follows the back of the trail hand/wrist in the downswing and post impact (in your GEARS software). I can't seem to figure out where to aim the sidearm throw to ensure adequate shaft lean (ie compression). Would be an interesting perspective on the trail wrist and release. Thanks, fellas!

I think this anchor point is really going to help me get open when actually hitting shots and not just my rehearsal swings. I’ve been struggling with replicating my rehearsal impact with “real” impact and suspect this is a limiter at speed.

5:54 So 4.5 inches is normal and 9 inches is too much. Got it!

Great stuff, can you talk about the difference between a 6 foot golfer gripping the same 5 iron as a 5' 6" golfer, does the short golfer have to choke up to get the club head flat on the ground at address. In other words, I'm 5' 6", I use standard clubs, do I get them shortened or choke up, thanks.

What's up Mike and Shaun? You mention the right knee moving forward 4.5 inches toward the toeline at impact. How much laterally does the right knee go towards the target at impact from address? Thanks

Guys, another great video. What forces either from the ground or in the body bring the right side around? As the pressure leaves the right foot in the transition what causes the right side to come out and around - does the core drive this?

Where is a link to the plane board? Thank you!

I’d love to know more specifically about chest rotation. I’ve been playing with sports box 3D and it’s always telling me my chest is too closed at impact and I find it really hard to feel the correct motion. When I get it in range, it actually feels far more like I’m side bending than rotating… be great to know your thoughts on this!
