The Federal Government was paying double the going rate for bison hides.

I remember the saddest achievement was in red dead redemption called manifest destiny. You got it if you killed all the bison in the game. Devs made it so there was a finite amount and wouldn’t respawn

Never underestimate man's ability to be completely evil.

Now I understand why Charles in RDR 2 was so pissed at the two hunters who killed those bison for no reason just so the native tribe can suffer. Cause Charles said that wherever the Bisons go the Indian tribes follows.

To deprive the native Americans was the main reason. Evil just evil

That’s one of the few tactics to literally bringing down a nation of people completely destroying their food supply

Destroy supply lines, a tactic we still use today

Bison have only recently been removed from the endangered list. It's taken well over a century for Bison numbers to get its current level. The Bison population is not even half of what it used to be, before the massacre.

As a native American, yes. They aimed to extinct millions of bison simply to starve the natives.

Disobedience is not the problem in our world, it's mass obedience! There is no moral compass when it comes to following orders.

Yes, all my life I’ve heard that the motivation for eradicating the bison was to eliminate the traditional way of life of the Native American population. There was a huge push to “Tame the West” and How the West was Won, but they couldn’t settle where fierce native tribes were defending the territory that had supported their civilization for all time. Those bison were both food and shelter to the native people. Teepees we’re made from bison hides, hides were bedding and warmth. My dad’s family had a huge ranch in Nevada which was sold off during the depression. My mother was a ‘half-breed’ Pacific North West Native American, adopted by a wealthy liberal family in the mid 40’s. My parents were fascinated by native culture and history, and my father in particular collected books about it.

I grew up in the Pacific Northwest, and basically all of our education was about native Americans and that part of history. That exact image they show here burned into my brain is a young kid. It always stuck with me, because I couldn't understand why people could just be so fucked up.

This is the type of history we always need to repeat and remember. Not Christopher Columbus “discovered” America.

There is a documentary on the one man who did everything he could to save the last few bison he could find at the time and worked to get their numbers back up.

Their was multiple factors.
The Great Plains tribes were dependent on bison
The bison were blocking railroads
The bison were in land people wanted to farm
And the bison were too populous
It’s horrific what happened and I’m glad the bison population has recovered

And they say the natives were savages.
