I love giving it to slaking. He already takes a turn to recharge, so it doesn’t change anything

One of my favorite gen 1 moves simply because of the way it looked, the way it sounded, & the way it shot. Everything about it was like giving a Pokémon a figurative Kamehameha-type move.

gamefreak should have brought back the "no recharge if kill" condition generations ago on hyperbeam and all the hyperbeam-like (giga impact, the elemental hyper beams for starters and so on.)
it's nowhere near as broken now in competitive play where you can just switch out on immunity/resistance and completely ruins the move anyway

There is one fringe instance of hyper beam being actually used outside of RBY: it was Slaking's strongest STAB move in Gen 3, and you didn't care about the recharge because he would just loaf around the next turn anyway.

Snorlax and Tauros with no recharge hyper beam were absolutely cracked

People have wanted an ability called "Rampage" which ignores the recharge of a move if it KOs the opponent.

Also the reason why this moved was used more on fast normal type Pokemon like tauros and less on slow ones like Snorlax is how critical hits worked in gen 1. In gen 1 critical hits were tied to speed the higher speed stat is the higher chance of critical hits

Earthquake is still the MVP attack for like the first three generations would literally erase everything that didn't have fly or levitate

I think this is how this move was intended to be originally. If they have time to switch Pokemon, you have time to recharge. It was supposed to be the ultimate move when used properly.

I started a living Dex challenge last year and when I was working my way through gen 1 I used Tauros for one of my playthrough and that's when I discovered what an absolute legend he is in those games.

Tauros/persian hyperbeams were 225 with 90%crit chance. It was sick

imagine this condition on Blast Burn, Hydro Cannon & Frenzy Plant. And also, Giga Impact, Roar of Time & Rock Wrecker. The ultimate make or break moves.

They really should have Hyper Beam and the other clones of it work like this again.

Actually, Hyper beam on Porygon Z and Sylveon is super useful!

I will die on the hill the HB nerf was a terrible idea.

Hyper Beam Slacking using « switch » mode was also a great tool in later gens. Similarly, if Slacking picked up the KO with Hyperbeam, the game would ask you if you wanted to switch out, circumventing both the recharge turn and truant turns.

Serious use case for Hyper Beam, Blast Burn, Frenzie Plant and Hydro Cannon: 1) you only have one turn to remove a pokemon that can sweep your remaining pokemon. Even if the pokemon that used it is sacked its completely worth the trade. 2) finish off a pokemon to win the battle. Its like having a loaded shotgun to hot swap to in a pinch. Especially if something like Blaze is active

Gen 3 Hyperbeam in Slaking goes…..bananas

Hyper beam is still good, sometimes you absolutely have to take out the opponent in a single turn. Its kind of like using explosion.

You should make slaking work like this in Emerald Legacy
