Up From The Underground: Episode 232

Here is a film I was very excited to see. More so now due to the controversy that has enveloped it. I went to see it and here are my thoughts.

Here is a link to the video of my review of A Most Violent Year.

You’re enthusiasm is so infectious. Selma was a pretty good movie (it isn’t my most favorite). It really put David and Ava on the map. And you definitely made some great points. David is great at playing inspirational roles not necessarily mundane roles. I’m actually scared to watch 12 Years A Slave 😂 👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽

I love your energy and love for movies. I think you feel the way about movies that I do about books. I love your collection of physical media behind you too. People you like inspire me to be better at making videos lol. Thanks again mate.

Can't argue with you man. Definitely saw the superimposition as completely pointless, Oprah was way over glorified, and I cut out a whole 3 minutes from my vid just ranting about the cinematography lol. Appreciate your views on it!

Wow.  We totally disagree on this one.  I was really moved by Selma.  I learned a lot and thought the narrative was vey compelling.  The only quibble I had with it was why cast Brits as  LBJ and George Wallace?  Their accents wandered and I didn't think they were very good.   I think they totally deserved to be nominated. I didn't think the acting was over the top.  They make him an imperfect man, someone you can relate too. I liked the quiet moments and thought it felt natural. I thought it was actually quite tame when it comes to these type of pictures.  Watch Rosewood or Amistad and this move is subtle. Oh well.  I guess you can't please everyone.

I agree with you I think they tried to treat too much subject at the same time. Some characters, who seems very essential, were not properly introduced-I just discover their importance at the end of the movie where they presented them. This kind of decreased the impact of the movies on me. Also the end was just average to me It was supposed to be the climax, the great march and instead of portraying it properly, they just ended up showing us footage of the old march(like seriously..wouldn't have it been more appropriate after the credit or the ending of the movie..).

Anyway, I really do agree with you that the movie is good and worth seeing but it's truly not as effective as it should have been. The movie doesn't deserve its 98% on rotten tomatoes. To me it felt more like a very good HBO film more than anything else.David Oyelowo was great though and I do think Duvernay has talent.the beginning of the movie was great.
Great review!

It's too bad this movie just didn't live up to it's potential :(  I'll probably still try and see it at some point but at least now I know I don't have to rush out before it's out of theatres
