I've seen so many people getting angry about this movie, labeling it as "another white guilt" film.
The number of African-American actors that get regularly get lead roles in movies are...quite a few. Only real money makers I can think of off the top of my head are Will Smith, Denzel Washington, Kevin Hart, Samuel L. Jackson, and Jamie Foxx. Even less female black women.
When a movie like Exodus comes out, which gives darker skinned actors a chance to have lead roles, Hollywood still gives those roles to white actors.
When a movie like this comes out about our history, people get mad that it's a "white guilt" movie. Even though it's history. Important history.
From what I'm seeing
1. Black actors don't usually get lead roles in movies at all
2. Black actors can't even get movies about their own countries like in Exodus.
3. These true stories about civil rights or slavery, which come out maybe once a year, are all African-American actors have.
And people are still angry.

OH YEAH! Sometimes we give roles to African-American actors with some movies about fictional characters, like Annie! And now finally people are-oh...nvm they're still angry that Annie was casted black.

Can't wait to see this though. Great review, Chris. Sorry for going on a rant lmao.

Half expected Chris to start out with this review with "Now Im a big fan of black people, they meant allot to me growing up and I feel thats part of the reason why I enjoyed this so much"

I think the reason why we haven't seen that many MLK bio movies is because people have so much respect for his memory that they treat the subject matter very carefully. No one wants to be the director or the actor that screws up the MLK movie, accurately portraying any historical character can be difficult but MLK is a whole different kind of hard, but from what reviews have been saying it seems like they nailed it. Really excited to see this.

I believe this movie would be fantastic to use as a teaching tool in class. I grew up at the tail end of the civil rights movement (in the aftermath) and unfortunately I believe there was a lot of unfinished work that are civil rights leader's (Martin Luther King & Malcolm X) left us with, and there was no real leader to guide us through those moments. I think it's sad that so many young people (even my own child) take for granted the liberties that they have today. I truly believe that King would hang his head in shame if he saw some of the things that we did today.

Will you be doing a review for Inherent Vice?

Saw this movie last night actually, I really loved this movie. I am putting it on my best of 2015, because it came out where I live last weekend. A+, the performances and the directing were stellar. I think that not giving David Oyelowo the Oscar and the movie best picture would be really upsetting.

Everytime you talk about that Toonami block I get excited. I just hope its Steve Blum, it's the icing on the cake. It's the perfect choice seeing as he's Spike and you've been talking about Cowboy Bebop recently and he was the voice of Toonami.

“Things that shaped me as a lover for entertainment” Chris I definitely think your gonna talk about your first experience with porn.

The on-screen text refers to the FBI's log gathering intelligence on King's doings and whereabouts (which gives his phone call to the singer a layer of creepy, given that they are EVERYWHERE.)

I think the movie is pretty descent to show to the class. The movie was okay. But it wasn't that great. I think the movie needed more suspense, more defining moment that impact the audience. I also agree with the characters, most of the characters weren't interesting at all. By the way, this movie isn't about whites oppressing black people. This is about a civil rights movement. Blacks and whites worked together in this movie for equal rights. High class, politics, and the law were the ones who needed a mind change.

I thought it was flawless. In Dawn of Apes Caesar is the only deep character. In Nightcrawler Lou Bloom is the only deep character. Those films didn't need all the characters to carry the film, only the one guy. Same for Selma.

I've had my eye on this. I've always felt like Malcolm X did more for us, but I'm glad Dr. King is finally getting his own film. I will definitely have to see this.

I personally also enjoyed Coretta King played lovingly by Carmen Ejogo, and just seeing Tessa Thompson from Dear White People made me very, very happy. Also the person of John Lewis played by Stephan James was also very good. So to me, there were some good ones around MLK.

This was one of my favorite films of 2014, though to be fair I did see it here in 2015 once it came worldwide.

Oyelowo is the frontrunner, to me, to win the Oscar but of course I doubt it'll happen.

Does it talk about him cheating on his wife? Is that what Chris mentioned by his human flaws?

You know what's messed up? Among other things? That MLK is a grandfather. His granddaughter is still young. This happened in the time of our grandparents and it's effects are still in play today! This is so sad : (
