It's used to make an impression for an "ear mold, " which is then connected to a hearing aid with a tube. The ear mold is what you see inside a Deaf persons ear . The hearing aid sits behind the ear. The string has a tiny cotton ball on the end to protect the inside of the ear. Ear molds need to be replaced on a regular basis as a child grows. My son is Deaf, we've done this since he was 8 months old.
