Table of Contents:
00:00 - Student Services Department
00:04 - Congratulations!!!!
00:09 - Lynne Beauprez
00:29 - I moved to OP 30 years ago because I was in an interracial marriage before it was commonplace, and we wanted to feel comfortable in our community. We appreciated the diversity we saw around us and I decided to teach in town. I can't imagine teaching anywhere else after being here!
00:42 - I’ve been in education for 34 years; I taught every grade level K-8, both in general ed and special education. I've taught 6-8th grade math, science, special education resource, Alternative Ed, and Multi-Needs in D97.
00:57 - I worked at UIC for a project that wrote a K-5 math text, and became involved in teacher staff development around Chicago and the country.
01:09 - I've provided classroom support & PD to teachers for over 25 yrs (in D97, CPS, and around the country), and spent 9 years as a mentor to new staff in D97.
01:20 - I am very proud of how many lives I've touched in a positive way and am blessed I could do this work for 34 years.
01:30 - After retirement, I will help family and friends with elder-care and landscape gardening. I will read, travel, and listen to as much live music as possible.
01:42 - Mary Nelson
01:51 - In my twenties, I deliberately chose Oak Park because I wanted to live in a progressive community which celebrated diversity.
01:59 - Teaching is in my blood. My parents were teachers and I love the rhythm of the school year. As a young girl, I realized I wanted a career where I could help make my world a better place. A career in teaching filled that desire!
02:11 - My first 8 years of teaching were in Catholic high schools. I took a break for a while and worked in financial services. I quickly realized how deeply I missed teaching, and earned a M.Ed. from UIC in special education. Off I went to public education and never looked back!
02:25 - Now after more than 30 years of teaching, I will start my retirement journey in June. I'm looking forward to traveling adventures with my wife and pursuing my hobbies of reading, cooking, singing and music. I have fantastic teaching stories to tell! I dream about sharing these stories with others; perhaps I'll end up telling them on the Moth Hour!
02:40 - Kathy Sweeney
03:00 -
03:22 - My parents were both first born children. They believed in getting a good education and working hard. They instilled in me that if you put your mind to it, you could do anything. I hated school and had a hard time acclimating to our new American life. My dialect sounded nothing like anyone in my class. No one could understand me. I was taken to the testing room and given a battery of tests. My first- grade teacher was frustrated that I could not spell or write. You see vowels sound quite different than my mother’s strong brogue. When she helped me with spelling, she spelled words aloud and they sounded nothing like my teacher or classmates. Although, I didn’t have a learning disability I could probably have benefited from ELL services. Years later, I would find out from my older sisters that they too had been neuro psych-tested because of this same teacher.
04:00 - My first -grade experience made me think if I was ever a teacher, I would be nothing like my teacher. I always had a soft spot for the kids who didn’t get it right away and thought maybe I could break it down and make it easier to understand. As a child, I remember walking through Oak Park with my mom and sisters on our way to the Oak Park mall. I remember walking past Holmes school and thinking that would be a cool place to teach! Little did I know that many years later, I would end up teaching in the Oak Park School District!
04:25 -
04:50 - I took a long break from teaching when my children were small. I have taught for 28 years… 22 in Oak Park; nineteen years at Whittier and three years at Beye School as a Resource teacher. Before I came to District 97, I taught in Catholic schools, St. Williams in Chicago and St. Francis Xavier in La Grange.
04:58 - From the bottom of our hearts, we thank you for all of your years of service!
