Pro tip: if you have a tank thats less than 10 gal, just use a desk lamp with a 6500 kelvin CFL bulb. Also, chihiros is a great budget brand. No need to spend $50+ on light for a nano tank.

I have a fluval LED light on my Fluval Spec V tank (5 gallons). Until I reduced my lighting levels all the way down to 8%, I had constant algae problems. It may just be that I had too much light for the size of my tank, but I was astounded how far down I had to dial the light brightness to make it work.

For the longest time I always wondered why I always had algae and little plant growth despite the water changes and ferts. Thank you for educating us I appreciate this video, I'm gonna switch my light to a better one wish me luck 💜

I’ve had good luck with Chihiros both the A series and RGB. I initially had the a series on my cube 8 gallon and it grew all of my plants really well all low tech and some mid-high tech plants. After I began to inject co2 I bought another Chihiros, the RGB this time, I run both on my tank and so far all of my plants are exploding especially my Ludwigia super red. For the price point of both with the ability to dim I’d say a total win. I initially had the little finnex light you had in the beginning too but it really didn’t grow anything for me.

Tip #4: When the light is on, the process of photosynthesis dominates the process of respiration which is essential for growth (plants breath 24/24 but breathing is exclusive at night). Photosynthesis is a high-performance activity : it must be compensated by restorative nights. Gas exchanges linked to process of respiration at night and to photosynthesis are complementary mechanisms. But photosynthesis must exceed breathing so CO2 gain must always be greater than the losses (more CO2 = more photosynthesis...so start injecting CO2 into tank before turning on the light). By day, plants consume CO2, at night they expel it.

Always enjoy your videos. You give such practical advice and keep it short and sweet. This was timely for me as I’m cleaning out the red tail floaters in three tanks they immediately turned to slime. Very disappointing.

What about when you add new plants to an already planted aquarium? Do you reduce the lighting to help the new plants, or does that hurt the old plants?

My Aqueon hood came with one white bulb and space for a second. I think I'll keep the white in the front slot and put their red/blue bulb along the centre of tank. Maybe the white alone will help the plants acclimate.

Setting up my first tank. New obsession.

I have some advice for beginners at least from my experience, if u have both slow and fast growing plants in the same tank, and your fertilizer is sufficient for the fast growing plants, the slow growing plants may have algae growth on it. This is from my experience so I’m not sure if it’s the same for u anyways good luck on your first planted tank guys!

My tanks are on for 12 hours a day, but the last two hours they are on blue light to settle everything down and then the lights are out for 12 hours. So far I have had no problems with algae, and my plants are all growing with lots of new growth.
