The Coaching Cult: A Very Dangerous Trap #scamstory

In this video, I'm reading an email from a concerned viewer sharing the story of their friend who has been brainwashed by the coaching industry. The writer describes their friend's use of fear-based sales tactics and mistaken good intentions. A lot of what is shared throughout the conversation highlights common rhetoric and behaviour we see time and time again in the coaching industry, and as a result I have included numerous examples of these behaviours in practice to demonstrate. Let's dissect, debunk, and have a discussion about the potential dangers of these pyramid-style business coaching programs.

Just found this video. You are SPOT ON. The way they preyed on people especially during the pandemic was repulsive. I almost bought into it for 21k and THANK GOD my husband forbade it!

Yeah - I don't think many business coaches will watch your video and see themselves in a new light. They'll just call you a hater and say you are doing this because your own coaching business failed - just like the people in MLMs say about the anti-MLM content creators.

People with mental illness (autism for one) are so vulnerable to being scammed. My 29 yr old friend is delusional with this stuff.

Thank you for this video! I am in this space and I realize I am one of those emotional people lol that got sucked into the dreams they were selling and even started selling the dream and used these tactics myself! Recalibrating now, lowered my prices and aligning back to my values and what I desired to do in the first place before finding those Instagram coaches. *Helping women* in an authentic way

Right!!!! Ugh I’ve been WAITING for this conversation!
My whole thing is that… coaches and consultants need to be actually successful in their actual fields. There are so many “social media consultants” that have like 50 followers… and it’s like… how are you going to help me with these tips and tricks and classes (PAID courses) if you don’t have a huge following??? Your “tips and tricks and courses” mean NOTHING if it can’t even help YOU.
I just don’t see how they think they’re fooling anyone…
I would love to hear an actual response to this specific critique bc every time I try to bring this up to some of these people, they just ignore it and talk about how their coaching can help me… or they just block me lol.
This has been a rant lol. Love this vid.

I loved this video and felt very seen, thanks Danielle, love the work you are doing here. I have been sucked into these schemes when I was super vulnerable during the pandemic and I had recently trained for 2 years as a leadership coach. There is a lot of poor practice out there because I think so much of these programmes are focused on the get rich quick idea. Things jarred all the way through the process, from the fear based tactics - when I challenged this, I was told this is just how humans respond best and I had a duty to help people past their "instincts" and should follow their suggestions to make $1m a year. When I said I don't want $1m a year I wanted to earn enough to pay my bills and add to my pension, I was told I am aiming too low. When I challenged that from my training as a coach, it sounded like they were suggesting I basically tell people "how to" do things, was more like training or mentoring, I was told that the training I had done was clearly not good and hadn't set me up to be successful. I finally walked away having spent a lot of thousands on ads with no return. I was told I wasn't making big and bold enough statements about what "I" would be doing for "THEM" and that I wasn't using the techniques to make people buy. The shaming and guilt machine was in full force.
Today I offer collaboration training and coaching for groups and individuals. The training involves learning techniques to help people learn together and the coaching is back to the close definition that proper certified courses go with and various associations focus on. It's about giving people some space to think, to process and consider options, think critically and work through how to work with their whole body to become more collaborative. I am in a privileged position today to offer mostly on a pay what works for you basis and I also provide spaces for people to do the work between sessions, as such I'm neither destitute nor living the high life, I'm middle of the road. I guess one distinction is that genuine coaching is about building on the skill and energy people already have in an area, and relies on the first rungs of Maslow's hierarchy already being met. I check with new clients that they are in a place to do the work and ask why they want coaching. Sometimes by the end of the call, the person has realised they already have the tools and what they want is some accountability, or someone not in their business / area to bounce ideas off and overtime we explore how they could move to do that with their team perhaps. I get supervision once per month where I go through the work I am doing with my clients to ensure I am working effectively and ethically, and we regularly talk about how to end coaching engagements to prevent dependency - or co-dependency. It's complex and challenging, because there is the dilemma between earning money to pay bills and ensuring the work is safe and effective. But a mature practice recognises this and tries to take steps to be transparent about this. I wish this was more of what the industry was known for. Although, I am finding it easier today to distinguish myself from those offers you mention as I move back to that authentic place and try and strike a balance between sharing value, letting people make choices and also making sure that I am not employing fear in my messaging. Thank you so much for exposing this part of the industry.

Yo I love this sooo much, just the video I was looking for. I'm going back to school to become a therapist, but have been having some second thoughts as social media influencers make it look so easy with reels just like this. I was feeling down for awhile because I'm just not capable of this level of gaslighting and manipulation, but I had been mistaking it as a "skill" one needed to develop to have an entrepreneurial business. Turns out I don't want to be engaging in this kind of behavior, especially as I have been in manipulative relationships in the past.

It's crazy this content is even allowed to exist, but I suppose it's the wild west of internet these days. Glad I have almost completely gotten off social media (I go on once a week for an hour, and mostly watch YouTube). I had been posting rational, trauma-informed content for a little while but nobody signed up for my programs. It obviously cannot compare to the clickbait content you shared, so that was why. I would rather study and work a little harder to provide genuine care to people instead of scamming people for their money...that is simply not ethical and would make me feel terrible at the end of the day.

I just found you today from your other video about making money as a YouTuber in your first month - great video! And I watched this one. You are my spirit animal 😂I have a feeling I’m going to really like the content you create

I don’t even know how I got here lol. But great video. The thumbnail worked brilliantly because I was looking for none of this 😂 but you have great insight.

They totally prey on SAHM's just like MLM's. I know you've said this before but like i want to see coaching from people who've actually made a real business succeed that's NOT about telling people how to succeed in business 🙄

can't a friend simply logically point out that their friend is in a failed business? Us boomers have many cliched sayings, one of them is "Never throw good money after bad" and a category of person we were taught to avoid, is "show ponies" which is basically every scammy coach ever

I love your videos and am looking to build my channel as well. I've been listening to the "coaching cult" followed MLM marketing as well and am looking to expose that as well and help those trying to get started as I get started as well. Your videos are really informative. I've subscribed to you today and this is my second video watching of yours. Keep it up!

It’s so hilarious to see how hard they try to sell, when this “mentor” function can literally be provided by certified psychologist or psychotherapist

Ohhhh, how I hate hearing these coaches say “the fear” is what holds people back. For good reason. I lost everything I had on my business account after signing up for one of these coaches. It sickens me to see these “wanna be” coaches put this terrible content out…. I hope many people are smarter than me, and listen to their gut when they feel “the fear”. Don’t fall for these programs people!

They take advantage of vulnerable people. I had one convince me to go against my fear and give her 4000 dollars. Her coaching was very basic. And she had no education or training outside of getting coached by other women. Honestly, I got nothing from her.

even the money back guarantee is a false promise, as the coach will have plenty of examples to how the mentee failed to follow the instructions: "you didn't succeed

I think you are absolutely right with the idea that you can’t convey value with something that is not valuable 😂 however these coaches will try and convince you, you just need to TrY HarDEr.

Embarrassing now to think we thought we were smarter than the other people on the outside who could see the opportunity for what it was 😂😂😂
