Some notes here:
- You can transfer roms via WiFi (SFTP, SMB), no "weird connection" needed
- The preconfigured emulators are not necessarily the best option, you can get performance similar to a pi 3 from this
- The menu is configurable with a bit of knowledge, so you can add new emulators there and don't have to use the retroarch UI directly like shown in the video

All in all, yes - this is a tinkering system. The software is not that mature yet, but does the job. Updates are coming constantly though.
If you have one and need help, check the forums. A lot of common questions have been answered there already, and the community is very helpful.

4:28 Note about Cave Story slowdown:
The Freeware version (that was on the system) is running at 50 FPS, while the rest of the ports like WiiWare, Steam, and Switch are running at 60 FPS. Even though it's a PAL speed, it doesn't really actually bothering much since it was how it was.

And by the way, there is a way to cap the Freeware version to 60 FPS, but I don't know how complicated to bring those on this system.

Okay now I want a Rerez "top 10 D-pads" cuz damn everytime he says a D-pad sucks I am just left thinking well which controller does have a great D-pad in his opinion

hey @Rerez since the emulation frontend is based off RetroArch, you can go to the menu inside the emulator (for any "core") and enable the autosave on exit and autoload on start, so you no longer lose progress if exiting, and also you get right back into the game when coming back.

Another thing, you can very easily mod an HDMI output and swap the preinstalled SD card for something like Lakka, another linux distribution created for free and open source consoles.

If it's not an accidental press I'd recommend pausing the game before exiting, so you don't get jumped the moment you enter back

I know it's a huge nitpick but I am not keen at all on the "ears" (The plastic bolts) being so close to eyesight and the screen. I understand why it's placement is there, but visually I feel like I'd keep being distracted by them

It essentially is a file server. It's a Linux computer running a custom operating system. That's why file transfer isn't as easy, especially if the ROM folder is in a format that can only be used by the operating system, and other computers can't read it.
