NEVER Drive In Athens! 🇬🇷

This video is about 2 things: Driving through the insanity that are the roads of central Athens and the marvellous archaeological and historical spectacle that is the Acropolis and Parthenon. I had to suffer the former to enjoy the latter.

I take one last wander around the city of Athens which by now, after spending some time there on two visits during this trip, was quickly endearing itself to me as a ramshackle city full of ancient archaeological wonders countered with a vibrant modern culture and full of warm and friendly locals. I was sad to leave. At the very end of my trip I also managed to at last visit the Acropolis and it's much admired Parthenon. This ancient temple to the goddess Athina is iconic and timeless in its splendour. It sent shivers down my spine to gaze at it from beneath. I couldn't help but imagine the Ancient Greek philosophers pondering the big questions as they gathered here thousands of years earlier. Please visit the sites below if you wish to learn more about the Acropolis, I doubt my very limited knowledge can do it justice. I also highly recommend visiting the nearby Acropolis museum before your visit, as it gives you a base knowledge before you see it yourself.

That's how I feel every time I do that, and I've been driving on these roads all my life. Takes some balls to drive in large greek cities. Even people from the countryside have trouble, even more so a foreigner.

Hi Wendall, brilliant video, great that you made it to the Acropolis, what a fantastic place! Driving in Athens looks a bit like driving here in Bogota, except here the roads are full of potholes and drivers often carry machetes in case they get into altercations with other drivers. We always take the bus!

This is why I wouldn't want to drive in Greek cities. Thankfully they have buses👍🤣. Well done in making it through without damaging your hire car 🚗 👏 Did your rooms have aircon? Like the rooftop and plunge pool. I visited Athens over 25 years ago and doesn't appear to have changed. I remember loving the street food, people and the history. Right on👍🍻

Glad I stumbled on this video to show my Mrs as she has delusions of grandeur about driving next time we are in Greece. She drove this year on some back roads in the Epirus region and that was scary enough. Great vid, will check out some more of your stuff, cheers!

As a pure Athenian, I feel so depressed when I'm trying to drive in this city. Yes my friend you have nuts in your pants. Maybe it's the worst challenge you can force to yourself when you are in Greece. Generally, I think that we have good enough public transportation so I use it all the time and I'm denying to drive in Athens.

I went to crete and they treated us great because my grandad actually fought in crete during the war. New Zealand troops were based in crete. Also mythos beer isn't bad

You don't really need a car in Athens since It's easier to use public transport if you stay in the city; we used the metro a lot; I did hire a car from Thessaloniki to drive around the country and to go to out of the way places ; it gives you that flexibility, especially when the family is with you; I think we clocked close to 3000 kms in the three weeks I had it

My bum hole would have been twitching I tell ya...that was even worse than our cornish lanes in August 😉🤣. Well done you I salute you sir and for both making it out alive (if that was myself and my husband it would have been very tense with a lot of "shut the fuck up I'm concentrating" 🤣)

They blew the roof off because the Acropolis was being used by the Ottomans as ammunition storage... hence Booom!
