As an Aussie I can confirm every school has houses. You don’t get to pick them they are assigned randomly by the schools system and most times if you had an older sibling at the same school before you, you will end up in the same house they where in.

I’m an Australian and genuinely assumed that the US would have this too. The houses are mainly for competing against each other in school carnivals and sports events. It is basically just a team that you are assigned to.

british guy here, to answer the hat question:
we can't tell you or else the housing system collapses and the earth gets swallowed into a black hole

We had houses but we weren’t sorted so much as plonked into the ones with space… or at least that’s what they told us lol

-Yellow was very competitive (except me)
-Blue was intellectually competitive
-Green was sports competitive
-And red existed

Depending on the competition, you knew it was going to be a fight between yellow and whichever other house was strongest in that area.
And I found this hilarious, since I was in the yellow house, and I was never good at sports and had too much of a crippling fear of humanity to ever try debating 😂😂. I added nothing😅

Oooh, so that's why Hermione in OotP said her parents understood what it is like to be a prefect even though they are muggles. As a Hungarian, I was totally unaware of that houses and prefects are not a concept invented by Rowling to add more colour to her books.

American here, we had "teams" in middle school though they've since been removed. Same colors, though one year they added a fifth, and they changed each year and were dependent on your classes. Year one (6th) the theme was exploration, year 3 (8th) was related to the school's mascot. They got rid of them for a number of reasons, mainly bc they decided that they caused excess division between the students (recall, they were based on classes) and bc the student body was growing so much

As an Australian I feel that it's important to note that only that one school has fursonas as their house coats of arms, all the other schools, even the public schools, have normal house crests, for instance, mine was a dragon, normal heraldic style dragon, nothing sexual about it

British student here, in my school we have house competitions and house points. I’m in Collingwood (the yellow house) and we won the cup last year. My primary school didn’t have houses but most do. The only downside to the house system is that there is no sorting hat - the competitions would be so much more fair that way.

At my high school we had Vikings 🟥, Trojans 🟩, Romans 🟪, and Spartans 🟨.
I was a Viking 🗿

The funny thing about HP is a lot of "wizarding culture" is just English/British culture. Which makes the lore of how she couldn't get the thing published at first make a lot more sense because it wasn't actually anything special. Imagine pitching an uninspired chosen one story but changing nothing about setting or culture of the real place you grew up in, except it has magic Hitler. I can think of fifteen examples of just that set in the American South except with the KKK off the top of my head.
