Back in the 70's the hike to the top was a different route. Mile or so up a dry stony creek then climbing up small switchback trails to the top. Later they graded a path that was much more gentle. If I had friends going for the first time I'd go up the old way and down the new way. They were a little pissed when they saw how easier the new one was.

That looks like an amazing hike! If you’re coming from a low elevation, then you normally wouldn’t deal with altitude sickness at that elevation. However, it’s high enough that your lungs will feel the thinner air at that height. You can definitely get out of breath more easily at that elevation. When that happens you just need to take a slow but steady pace so that you’re lungs don’t work harder.

As you probably guessed from that old Beatles song I referred you to in my previous comment, I am getting along in years, and am now significantly over 70. And I'm wondering to myself if I would even be up to hiking up to Guadalupe Peak - you see, I live in nearby New Mexico. I haven't done hikes that ambitious for quite some time now - my usual thing is a little romp in the foothills of the Sandia Mountains outside of Albuquerque.

“While mountain lions need not be feared…” my butt. 😂 You don’t need to live life like they’re about to get you but if you see one close that sees you, you know…good luck.

The hike up is difficult. Going down is easy, you can take your time and enjoy the scenery.

I’m planning on driving 10 hours tomorrow and climb it. How long did it take you to climb from start to finish?

Chet, the music is a bit intrusive in this one buddy. Can’t hear anything but “WOOO WOOO WOOO” while you are talking and telling us to listen to bugs lol

I'm guessing bikes aren't allowed on the trail?

While I don't condone the harassing of wildlife, it is cool to see the view from up there. Really liked the madrone tree, too - very cool!
