Yes. In the end finishing this book appears like an achievement.

Finally I have finished reading this book. Yes, it's long but I'm glad that I persevered. It's now one of my favourite books.👏

My favorite book in general, and favorite by Dostoyevsky is The Idiot, Myshkin reminds me of Aliyosha in this book, but yes, the ratings given are EXACTLY the way I interpret Dostoyevsky's work. Plot is secondary and honestly, plot is not the point anyway, its the characters, the writing, and the philosophy, like you said. There are two parts in this book that are just amazing, Ivan defending atheism to Aliyosha and later Aliyosha explaining Father Zossima's life. You get two perspectives, the atheist and religious and honestly both the points are right, there is no clear cut answer and they are both formed extremely well. This was a person who really cared about these issues.

Fiction and philosophy go so well together, too. Lovely review of a challenging and fantastic book.

A very good review. i just finished reading it in Russian (which is my second mother tongue), and I agree particular on the length of the passages - i had to reread in a number of places because could not follow the flow! But such a great read - i was blown away by it. What i enjoyed is also the historic and cultural context that i immediately visualized and takes me back to when i was born in the 80s in the Soviet Union.

A lot of what you said made me think of Anna Karenina by Tolstoy. It was a very long book and had a lot of philosophical and religious parts as well. One thing that always drove me crazy was how they wrote out every name, in full, EACH TIME! :) Was it the same with the book you read?

I've never though too much about the Russian classics like this but you've made me curious now. I will look at the page you linked Rachel and see how it works for me.

Even if religion is not one's thing, you should still read. It is not the focus of the book. Its more about reconciliation of the brothers. How each one copes with their own personal difficulties. The idea of God's world is even criticized (with good arguments). There is no one who wouldn't learn something from it.

Very nice review. I haven't read anything by Dostoevsky yet, but he's on the 1001 books to read before you die so someday! While I don't appreciate all the classics, most of them are there for a reason and are very much worth the read. Obviously >.<

Paul, I am so glad you enjoyed this one!!! What you say about Grushenka is really interesting, and I totally agree with you, I felt myself becoming a more confident reader as I made my way through the book. Which translation did you end up reading?
