Watch stuff and learn and chill hi whatsup ⚔️👋🧐

Hi everyone! I'm an American from the Northeast (New England). I want to create a watering hole for people who want to discuss, learn and teach about history through YouTube videos which you guys recommend to me through the comment section or over on Discord. Let's be respectful but, just as importantly, not be afraid to question any and everything about historical records in order to give us the most accurate representation of the history of our species and of our planet!

Its also very important to note that the area Denmark was offered but refused, there lives around 2 million people, which a majority of them was german, so that would completely change the population of Denmark including the political landscape. This decision from Denmark was also why in the second world war Germany didnt annex the occupied danish territory that was german before the first world war.

Glad you reacted to this, it's rarely brought up. For a little more on the subject - the Danish Viking capital of Hedeby is in the part the German's got to keep in 1920. Kinda feel that played into their propaganda a bit later on.. The later arrangement was basically 'we don't want our old lands back because we think they'll fight us for it soon enough if we do'. And although America, Britain and France were at the meetings, they weren't expected to help us in any war, once they went home. I don't think we were expecting the peace in Europe to last as long as it did. Baring in mind that with over 10x our population, Germany could just repeat their one day march across the border to take the whole country. Kinda like if the US had to take Florida. Can't overlook the fact Eugenics and the like were popularised here in the 20s - we were kindred, if not kin. At the very least, at the Nobility/educated/faithful end of the scale (at that time).

With the power of hindsight, I'd say it would probably have been best for Denmark to take the modern border + Flensburg and it's immediate surroundings. Which is a compliment to the solution they went with, as they just took it a little safer by bending the border 5km north instead of 20km south around a very mixed Danish/German area at the east end.

As little as I know of Danish history (I'm Swedish) I heard this was very beneficial for the Danish economy.
They struggled pretty much until after WWII though. One positive thing came from it if you are interested in old churches; they hardly built any new ones until a couple of decades later (50s or 60s) and rather maintained the old ones. So there are still a lot more old churches (some even medieval) than here in Sweden.

But we have to pretend hating each other, even if we really have warmer feelings for our neighbours. It's tradition. ;)
Whenever there is hockey we have to hate the Finns, when it's skiing we must sneer at Norway, and the rest of the time it's the Danes.

The Danish movie "1864" covers this (Two Steps From Hell version). Before the Prussians beat up Austria (1866), they practiced with Denmark. WWI style artillery barrage starts in 1864 in Denmark. This may be the reason why my Danish ancestors moved to America.

Otto von Bismarck was German Chancellor until 1890, and died n 1898. He may have been a political genius but he had nothing to do with WW I .

There was a big Danish population in Northern Schleswig, it had been ruled by the Danish Monarchy since the 1600's.
Denmark set a foot inside the entirety of Schleswig and Holstein who were a part of the HRE to have influence there, and as such the Danish King was also the Duke of Schleswig and Holstein

With the revolutions of 1848 Denmark fought a war to keep the Duchies under the Danish Crown and won. The Holteins especially saw themselves as much more closer to Germany.
Meanwhile the Danish King wanted to incorperate the entire Kingdom into a single nation, which made the Germans in the duchies angry.
Prussia and Austria come in 1864 and beat the hell out of Denmark and promises to hold a vote for the Danish people stuck in Northern Schleswig.
It was a big trauma to get stuck on the other side, and a lot of people held their own small revolts, and eventually 30.000 Danish people of Schleswig fought for Germany in WW1 with the hope of reuniting with Denmark in the new world order.

France and the UK saw it as an easy place to reduce the land of Germany, as some of the people there already wanted different borders.
Now Denmark had experienced Germany in 1864, and seen what they had done in France in 1870 and with WW1 and knew they were completely out matched so chose the diplomatic route of pissing the Germans off as little as possible to avoid a new invasion.
The so called American intervention was more general, as they thought that France and UK was going too far in punishing Germany. They cared little about what Denmark said.

To this day Danes in Schleswig are a recognized minority with a minority language of Danish. While Germans in South Jutland are a recognized minority with a minority language of German.

The Danish minority of Schleswig even has a political party that got seats in The Bundestag, and a party member said multiple Danish sentences in his speech for the German parliament.
While the Danish Queen always addresses the Danish minority of Schleswig in her New Years Speech
