As the creator of blink(1), he's shipped over 30,000 units that are now out in the wild and in use for custom signaling on everything from compile status to those emotionally important social media indicators. His talk at the 2016 Hackaday SuperConference covers the last mile that bridges your Internet of Things devices with its intended use. I think it is noteworthy that he evaluated a lot of technologies and decided upon Electron (= node.js + Chromium), based on Javascript and its handling of asynchronous processes.

Agree with the difficulty of keeping devices updated, ive just made an Alexa connected tv remote which passes the hotword via, via, via... http to esp8266, if my ip address changes, or my router changes. its not secure but I can change what my wife is watching on tv while im at work which i will get my fun from while it lasts.
Bluetooth 5 may address some of these problems.
