[Synopsis]

In this video, I show you how to setup and use 86Box 4.1.1.. This is the easiest way to setup and use 86Box without having to partition the hard drive, and go through all the procedures that are required to make Windows 98 work. You will need a fairly powerful processor to emulate Pentium II, I would recommend at least Intel I7-10700K or above. If you have anything less than that try to emulate a lower end Pentium II.

The machine I am setting up is a Pentium II 450 MHz slot 2 machine of 1998. The Pentium II 450 MHz was the best CPU of 1998, and it shouldn't have any programs developed in 1998 and before that. Back in early 1999, I had a Pentium II 400 MHz with a 3dfx Voodoo 2 8 MB 3d accelerator, and it didn't have any problems running any game at that time.

I tested PCEM V17 with the exact same settings, and I want to see the performance of 86Box. I want to compare to see if there are differences or not. If there are differences, I will make commentary on this video.

I am using a Voodoo 3 2000 AGP which wasn't supported with 86Box 2.01, nor was it supported on 86Box 2.10. The Voodoo 3 series of video cards didn't require a separate video card. 3dfx made a all in one card called the Voodoo Rush, and the Voodoo Banshee which didn't do well commercially. Before the Voodoo Rush had some driver compatibility issues, and didn't do well. I got my 3dfx Voodoo 3 2000 PCI video card in late 1999, and I was using it on a Pentium 3 550 MHz. The virtual machine I am setting up here isn't historical in anyway. Never the less, it does work well!

Having a emulator like this helps me fill the gap of PC gaming from 1997 to 1999. I can use other emulators to emulate MS-DOS, but emulating a Pentium 2 with Windows 98 can only be achieved using a emulator, like PCEM DosBox Pure, or 86Box. PCEM and 86Box are more accurate to what the real computer hardware was like. It isn't like FPGA(Field Programmable Gate Array), but then there are no FPGA Pentium 2s in existence. Currently, FPGA can emulate a Intel 486 with the Mistercade. When you get to computer gaming from 1996 to 1999, a Intel 486 isn't going to cut it. Using software emulation has some input lag, but with a fast processor it is noticeable.
