I find it weird that the fusion was initiated as soon as they both took off 1 earing, meaning they don't have to be from the same set, any 2 potara earrings can initiate the fusion as long as they're worn on opposite ears x3 I guess proximity also matters cause Goku was only wearing 1 at the same time too but Shin and Kibito were closer to each other and Shin was wearing his on the same ear as Goku so if Goku had been between Shin and Kibito he'd be the one to fuse with Kibito instead xD
