Your Windows Install Is Boring | Single GPU VM

Run windows in a VM within Linux; you won't lose much performance, and you'll gain more control over the OS, and not need to dual-boot. It's not for everyone, but for a certain type of person, it's great.

this is huge. i'm shocked i hadn't heard of this earlier. it might be time to ditch my dual boot setup. ive been wanting to switch to a custom windows iso for a while, so this is a good excuse to do that

I've used a Single GPU Passthrough + Arch for about a year in 2021 before I switched to a laptop and I've really loved it, the only thing that bothered me was the responsiveness and latency of the VM. The access speeds were really bad, so it was impossible for me to play any new titles that required SSD speeds. Also the audio bugged sometimes since I've used pipewire with a very low buffer (needed for some rhythm games like osu!).
I would only recommend a setup like this, if you have a strong Intel CPU with atleast >8 cores. I've heard that some Ryzen CPUs work really good, but for me on a R5 2600 it was a terrible experience because of how the SOC is designed (split cache between 2 CCX).

Or I just wont use windows at all, sounds like a better idea to me lol. To each their own though. I have found no reason to use windows anymore, I have not found any game that I enjoy playing that I could not get to run on Proton/Wine and I must admit the only windows application I have yet to give up is photoshop, However I have been able to get that running good enough in wine for my purposes. I could just switch to gimp, The only reason I have yet to do so is out of laziness. I could just take the time to learn Gimp which probably would not even be difficult. Other than that I do not miss windows at all. Arch with Plasma KDE is the perfect replacement for windows imo. At least for me.
