Proposed blacklist of CATL may cause fatal harm to Tesla, VW, Ford, BMW, and Mercedes

Key US lawmakers are demanding that US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin place Chinese EV battery maker CATL on the blacklist under the NDAA. This would effectively bar CATL from producing Electric Vehicle batteries in and for the US market.

But CATL supplies batteries to virtually all carmakers, including our own. Tesla is working with CATL to expand production in Nevada, to produce models under $25k. Ford and CATL are jointly building a plant in Michigan, and GM is strongly considering doing so.

Carmakers in friendly countries also rely heavily on CATL to produce low-cost batteries. Volvo, BMW, and Mercedes are heavy buyers of CATL, with large US manufacturing and marketing operations.

Commenters have pointed out that I mispronounced "Nio". And, that Stellantis is an EU company -- not an American one -- that owns lots of brands that do business in the US, including Chrysler.

Thanks much.

Ban, restrict, ban, restrict. It's sad to see a nation like America, which used to innovate to be on top, simply replace innovation with competitive bans and restrictions. You can't replace innovation with bans and restrictions.

You know the world has been crying out for justice, fairness, opportunities and equity. I truly believe in my heart that China's rise is nothing short of a miracle not just for the Chinese but the entire marginalised peoples in the world. It also includes the poor working classes in the west. Now these people can afford only what China produces. This is making the west angry and jealous. May China continue to rise and shine so that the rest of the world can succeed and breathe too.

Asking US senators to think through the unintended consequences of their bills is unreasonable. They cannot think two steps ahead

Another great analysis. No mainstream media is covering this. The downfall of western journalism.

Isn’t Apple also using batteries from CATL for its iPhone iPad and MacBooks?

The geopolitical sh*tstorm is the reason for the global economic slow down. Politicians are living in large while little people suffer.

I am 78 and an American citizen for the past 50 years. Though my formal schooling was in engineering I paid careful attention to western culture and American history. I want to see this country continue to be strong and on the rise. But, I have been distressed to feel this once vibrant democracy was on a downhill slide and becoming a Kakistocracy. Trump, Rubio, Peloci, K. McCarthy, Raimondo…. The list goes on. Very sad!

I am surprised Senator Rubio and Rep Moolenar have not done a comprehensive analysis of the implications of their proposal. If what you say is true and this proposal succeeds it will reinforce the dominance of the Chinese EV makers. US tariffs and sanctions seem to make Chinese companies stronger. Look at what happened to Huawei.
