Synology made the shift to digital for the annual reveal of their plans for the year to come and it became abundantly clear from the outset that they had users attention - given the fact the page link overloaded for many almost immediately! Synology has been a brand that is heavily 'Apple' stylized and their annual worldwide events have very much maintained that vibe. This recent shift to the digital (for obvious, pandemic reasons), although informative, certainly lacked the hardware coverage that we have come to expect at these events in previous years, shifting the focus far, FAR more towards software. Not just anyway software though, the presentations were focused on Diskstation Manager 7.0 and all its accompanying applications, services and improvements over DSM 6.2. Let's take a look at what Synology has in store for us in 2021.

Please do me a favor and close each of the dialogs much quicker. I mean the 1/2 a second you are currently showing them should be way more time than anyone needs to see what is on it. Also, it *really* helps when you open a dialog and then immediately grab it and wildly wiggle it around before quickly closing it while I recover from my temporary seizure trying to keep up. :)

a pity that DS218 does not have face recognition anymore in Photos. This is working great on moments today. Hope they may review that decision as face recognition on moments was an important buy argument for the DS218.

Have you tested the Synology drive app on the Mac? I have been waiting for DSM 7 really for this one feature. I need it to have all of the functionality that the Windows version has. That is, the ability to pick and choose which files are downloaded onto the mac's hard-drive and which ones are visible, but still "in the cloud." We were expected to get that functionality in version 7, or so I read somewhere. Sorry if this is not the best place to raise this question. Cheers. D

For example, when the initial setup only uses a 6TB hard disk with SHR RAID type. Then in the future we will add another 6TB hard drive, do we have to set RAID settings again when adding a hard drive or will it automatically become SHR and be allocated for protection?
I have DS420+ with DSM 7.1

In the case of hot spares, I really wish Synology would not force me to use the largest HD in the SHR pool as a hot spare. I'd actually like the option to use any of the hard drive sizes. If you think about it, with a mixture of older drives in my DS1815+, for example, I have 3TB, 4TB and 10TB HDs. I also have two DX513 expansion chassis attached for a total of 16 bays currently populated. The newer 10TB drives are not the ones dying, it's the 3 and 4TB HDs, and I have quite a few spares ready to replace them by attrition. I'd love to install a 3TB hot apare in one bay, and a 4TB hot spare in another bay for when the next 3TB or 4TB HD fails instead of forcing me to either upgrade to a 10TB or not use the hot swap feature at all and manually swap the failed HD. I am using SHR-2, but the odds of two drives failing during a 16-bay rebuild go up as these old drives get even older, and they really get a workout during the rebuild process. So, I like the idea if a drive is starting to show errors that DSM 7 will start the rebuild process. Why not have multiple hot spares if we have enough empty bays to support it?!

I have a backup NAS where i want to install DSM 7. It's just used for backup so i don't have to worry a lot. I also want to change the Raid configuration into SHR. And last but not least i want to increase the storage. So i bought bigger drives but now i am asking myself what should i do first? Upgrading first and then rebuilt the raid with the bigger drives? I can miss the data for a while cause as i said it's just a backup.
