Vocal Range of a Baritone | Lucas Lesson

In one minute, quickly learn the most common range for the operatic baritone singing voice. But firstly, an expansive range is not the goal for young baritones. One should find power in the voice from the middle out in both directions. Remember that as the voice moves down, do not be tempted to cover or darken the sound. Likewise, as the voice moves up, discover where your passaggio begins and that’s where the next journey will begin.

My range indications slightly vary across the board but it is the most common range for operatic baritones. Other genres don't apply. Enjoy! Let me know your thoughts below.

As a 21 year old Bass/Baritone trusting the process is something I struggle with many days. Love your voice and your vids!

Every youtube video that talks about vocal range has a comment section full of people with 8 octaves vocal range.

Thanks for such an encouraging video Lucas. I always find your light hearted, yet serious approach to your videos very endearing.

I'm a 21 Year old Baritone, and I think I'm beginning to notice similar changes to my voice. I find I have more resonance and bass than before, yet, my higher range is increasing, and becoming more supported. My Vocal coach often has me sing some Tenor roles, and peices, helping me to develop my higher range in a more classical way, as opposed to just squealing them out using some sort of falsetto and Head voice mix

Hi Lucas:

Thank you for this short video. I appreciate that you educate about the baritone voice and put an emphasis on its evolution process. I think this is something that gets lost on many young singers. I've observed that so many are focused on range and not quality, regardless of the voice part. I hope this video helps young baritones, but any singer can take something away from it.

Thank you for posting.

One of my greatest joys was to discover after the last few years of practice that I can now easily hit high notes that used to be impossible. I was told back then that it could be attained but frankly didn't believe it. Also vocal runs suddenly came out of nowhere. I have to thank BJ Thomas, Gregory Porter and especially Kurt Elling.

Was looking for exercises to help me tap into higher notes, instead found one of the more reassuring videos I’ve seen in a while. Much thanks, coming from a 20 year old baritone.

Very informative and straightforward! Thank you. It’s all about natural development

That's what a lot of singers don't realize. Gaining a lousy (usable) half tone can be a major gain.

Thank you so much for this information! I am 26 years old and I have a practice range: C2-G#4 by chest (sometimes B2 and A4 or Bb4) but my tessitura when I perform is D2-F4 by chest. I’m still searching and learning how to find and use my passagio to expand my range more. So I wonder, with that range of mine, what kind of baritone do I belong to? And what notes are usually the passagio points of baritone voices?
I hope that you can help me to explain these things!
Thank you so much again!

That's wild because when I was in high school, my range by the time I was in my sophomore year was as big as my voice -- ranging from Low D2 to high C5 to high C6 (falsetto warmups). Only thing I've noticed is my falsetto range has gotten lower over the years from C6 to now a stable B5 but the lower end has gotten even bigger, getting down to a wonderful B1!

Baritones have the biggest range naturally out of all of the voice types.

I'm a 20 year old tenor, when I was younger, my vocal range was pretty small, only capable of doing a few notes under Middle C and the highest note was probably a G4. My teachers were very confused whether to categorize me as a baritone or a tenor when I was young. What you said about the evolutionary process of the vocal range is very true, recently, my range has expanded in the last two years. My comfortable singing range has expanded from ''Low'' A#2 to a high C#5, I've also done D5, but that's when the voice starts becoming cracky. As a young tenor, I'm just happy at the moment to have found my High C and to be able to do it with relative ease, when up until two years ago, I struggled a lot even with a B4. It's an extraordinary feeling of self-discovery.

I have been studying opera technique for about 1.5-2 years now as an adult. The aria that first got me into it was Avant de Quitter ces Lieux. First aria I ever learned and it’s still tricky. I would add Di Provenza Il Mar, Il Suol to your list.

I’m afraid to tackle the classic Largo al Factotum lol.

Do you have any recordings of yourself singing when you were in your teens? I'm a voice student and I'm curious as to what a professional like yourself sounded like as a young singer.

great video! I always have to remind myself that the voice doesn't "finish" developing until around 28 to 30.

I'm a lyric Baritone and my range is G2 to G4 I can sing a high A but is not a tone I'd sing in any performance it takes great effort to sustain. My vocal coach said my range is typical of a lyric baritone. Obviously everyone is different and my have an extended range in their upper and lower tessitura it does not mean you're a better singer it gives you the ability to sing more repertoire.

I primarily do backups, have for decades- In school my range was determined by true notes- so I was classified a " Bass/ Baritone" one third below typical baritone range, 2 octaves from F to F. I have experienced recent trouble with fatigue due to "muscle-ing" notes too often- and so I'm checking out all of the YT vocal vids... I actually wish I could sing higher.
