In this presentation, Dr. Bailey discussed Alabama’s first Congressional Reconstruction legislature. This ground-breaking delegation represented the new Republican party and included the state’s first African American officeholders. Dr. Bailey will describe their experiences and the response of this law making body to social and economic changes in the tumultuous post-Civil War Alabama society. Dr. Bailey is a frequent lecturer and consultant on black history and is the author of Neither Carpetbaggers nor
Scalawags: Black Officeholders During the Reconstruction of Alabama 1867-1878 (2010). He served as an advisor for
documentaries on the Lincoln School of Marion and Reconstruction black officeholders by the Center for Public
Television at the University of Alabama. He also served on the state commission tracing the path of Spanish explorer De
Soto through Alabama. Dr. Bailey resides in Montgomery.
