Abraham Lincoln was the 16th President of the United States, serving from 1861 until his assassination in 1865. He is widely considered one of the greatest American presidents, known for his leadership during the Civil War, his advocacy for the abolition of slavery, and his eloquent speeches, including the Gettysburg Address and his second inaugural address.

Born in a log cabin in Kentucky in 1809, Lincoln grew up in poverty and received only a limited formal education. However, he was a voracious reader and taught himself the law, eventually becoming a successful attorney and entering politics in the Illinois state legislature.

As president, Lincoln faced the monumental task of preserving the Union during the Civil War, which began in 1861. He famously declared that "a house divided against itself cannot stand," and he worked tirelessly to unite the country and win the war. He issued the Emancipation Proclamation in 1863, which declared that all slaves in Confederate territory were to be freed, and he pushed for the adoption of the 13th Amendment to the Constitution, which abolished slavery throughout the United States.

Lincoln's presidency was marked by many significant events, including the Battle of Gettysburg, the siege of Vicksburg, and the surrender of Confederate General Robert E. Lee at Appomattox Court House. He was reelected in 1864, but his second term was cut short when he was assassinated by John Wilkes Booth in April 1865, just days after the end of the Civil War.

Today, Lincoln is remembered as one of America's greatest presidents, known for his steadfast leadership during a time of crisis and his unwavering commitment to the principles of freedom, equality, and democracy. His legacy lives on in the United States and around the world, and his words and deeds continue to inspire people to this day.

Even after the burial, workers took a peek inside the casket. His tomb was sealed off permanently to protect the remains from what I have read.

President Lincoln gave everything to this country, and I pray that some will remember, not only the work he did, but the life he gave. God Bless him, his family and may they rest in the Peace of our Lord.

The photo of his remains is not real. There’s one photograph of him in his coffin, but no pictures were taken when the casket was reopened in 1901.

We will never forget what you did for our country Mr Lincoln, and I know youd be ashamed of the world as it is now. I hope you're resting in peace.

They should let the man rest in peace. And not move him again

When opened, the smell was overwhelming and the head horrid. They closed it but still, someone had to reopen it and they were horrified by the state of his body and smell! Let them go and do not exhume bodies.

Beethoven who died about 38 years before Lincoln was also open casket before it went down the streets of Vienna for the public to pay their respects. Beethoven’s tomb was opened twice after that in 1863 and 1888 respectively

I find president Lincoln’s eyes to be melancholic……I don’t know why but the way he looked at others, reflect melancholy.

That said, he was a great president and leader and one of my favorite presidents of all times.

Rest in Peace always, President Lincoln, more presidents today should be like you! 🙏💐

They also opened his casket in 1901 to fix the tomb. Still well preserved according to witnesses probably due to the embalming

He was a man of the people and the people wanted to see him off for one last wherever they maybe in America and that's the final respects given.

They don't have TV to witness their president so that is why they brought his wake to the people

I really wish they’d let this man rest in peace. My goodness, how many times they gonna open his final resting place?

He was shot on April 14th and died on the 15th. Not the 19th. I only know this for fact because April 14th is my birthday and the two monumental things that happened on that day (different years) was that he got shot and the Titanic hit the ice berg.

It was opened a third time in the early nineteen hundreds when he was moved to where he rests now. Only a small group saw him but they did check to make sure it was him before moving him to his final resting place.

My grandma and grandpa worked quarter mile from railroad in Richland sc a tiny town between Westminister and Seneca, (not Richland county). They worked in a cotton field they sharecropped with Mr stribling. They all packed food grandma said almost like a Sunday picnic, not in celebration at ALL, more out of respect from the passing of our greatest president Franklin Delano Roosevelt. They set out a blanket in a small field 25 yards from the overhead train tunnel, it’s about 12’ tall and very short for today’s standards. They said they sat there and watched guards on the outside of the train with rifles, army I guess, and a large beautiful shiny pullman car draped in black and traveling pretty slow from Georgia and over keowee river through clemson sc and onto Washington. They said it was a very sad time. It got me to thinking how large and out of it this country is, we haven’t respected a president since Reagan ..

Don’t forget the sacrifice and everything President Jackson gave for his country. He actually fought side by side with his troops. Both ort to be honored and respected there’s a reason Lincoln told the band to play the song Dixie and and statues and monuments were built. The destruction of our confederate monuments and history is just dividing the Union which is the opposite of what Lincoln wanted.

I saw in a comment where they said he had melancholic eyes. I think I would have to agree. That and his often haggered looking appearance, is it any wonder? Just imagine the incredible strain he endured, and the burden he carried during the Civil War. I have always felt that the terms that he offered the Confederates after the war were proof that he did not harbor bitterness, but desperately wanted healing and reconciliation.

Think what you must of Lincoln but his words speak for themselves. Long live the Union. The last best hope for mankind.
