Space Marines don't give a damn about you or me. their duty is to their Legion first and foremost. they fight for the Emperor of mankind and human lives come second to that. of course when you read the novels you'll meet a whole bunch of main characters that don't fit this description. but they are definitely outliers when you look at the whole of Space Marines.

And to clarify it's not that they hate humans.. although many of them do, ( looking at you Grimaldus) it's more that they can no longer relate to them. they are bigger faster stronger smarter and practically immortal. they are Gods amongst men. to generalize their feelings, they have lost the ability to relate to mankind

Some exceptions to this rule
Lamenters: literally lost almost all of the chapter protecting a small civillian evacuation
Space Wolves: fought the inquisition with tooth and nail (no pun intended) to protect the people of armaggedon
Salamanders: they have familys and self sacrifice is saw by then as the greatest virtue of all
White Scars: the Khan said that his main mission is to save lives, even going so far as going to a situation whete Sanguinius (who can see the future) said to him "you will most likely die" to save lives.
