Speech Therapy without Therapy Materials (Language Therapy, too!)

We as speech-language pathologists are overworked and overstressed. There's not enough time to do everything we have to do. But what if we're over-complicating it? You don't need a new, flashy therapy activity for every session with every child. You can work on speech and language therapy targets "on the fly" during simple activities.

Using this "no therapy materials" approach to therapy will free up a ton of your time because you won't be trying to prep and plan elaborate therapy activities for every session. Plus, your therapy will be more engaging and motivating because it will be led by your client and it will follow their interests.

Yes!! About 22 years ago, a grad professor told us that SLP's should be able to provide artic/phono and language skills therapy in the desert (meaning, we do not need to purchase a ton of materials). I've kept that in mind all of these years. As a traveling SLP, this natural environment concept has saved muscle strains so many times LOL. Now with therapy being virtual and parent coaching being a technique, we are beginning to truly move away from ALWAYS using new, flashy therapy materials.

I work with preschoolers and end up incorporating their speech and language goals into play quite often. Glad to see you doing this- it gives me more confidence about what I'm doing!

Hi Carrie! Thank you for all of the wonderful resources. I've recently had a family ask me about ways to target rate of speech as their child sometimes rushes his words in sentences. My initial thought was a pacing board but since this child often uses several words (5+) do you have any suggestions to pass along to the family (particularly at home support)?

Yes, I love to work on Artic and language skills through play therapy! I find that there is a higher carryover rate as well!

My 3 and half year old doesn't understand questions? If I ask a new question, either he repeats it or doesn't respond. Can you suggest some measures so that he can differentiate between questions and statement.
