Do we learn about the culture in the new language or our own?

When I learn languages I get into the culture and history of that language. Listening to the history in the language connects me emotionally, but I get most of my information reading in English.

I think to an extent, we can learn about other cultures in our own languages. But to "feel" and "experience" the authentic cultures (whatever authentic means to you), I think learning the language of the culture, and talking to native speakers in the language helps a LOT.

History is great, I've been writing the history of France in French. Im around page 110 and I've drastically improved my writing, with a lot of room to improve sure. I use LingQ or Duolingo forums to get feedback and improve too.

At the end of the day history is a story. It is biased - very biased. Because it is about so much more than the "what happened when". It is about how events are connected, what lead to what and why etc. - If you want to 'really get to know a culture' by reading in / listening to the language(s) of that culture then you also need to do that from that culture's perspective (and imo it's especially important / noticeable when it comes to history and news). -- That does of course not mean you have to adopt that perspective for yourself or decide which is the right/true one (you still have your own perspective / your culture's perspective on certain things) but for a moment you need to allow two perspectives (and sometimes really two realities) to co-exist.

What about learning about your own culture in the target language?? That way it's way easier to fill in the gaps of the words we don't know cause the context is super familiar....

Comencé a seguir su concejo/método que es escuchar y leer en Inglés... pero no entiendo nada 😔 se que tengo que tener paciencia y ánimo pero señor Steve ¿qué otra cosa puedo hacer para ir aprendiendo? Le agradecería muchísimo. Por favor. Solo tengo 15 años y me propuse aprender Inglés antes de los 17.

Definitely both. One example that comes to mind is languages that have a concept of an 'Auntie/Uncle' by nature of them being a generation older than you. Korean, Arabic, etc. But not in English (or English speaking Western nations)

What I realised is that my reading skills are good, but I struggle so much with listening on almost all languages. Definitely something I have to work on more, I just don't know how

Steve what do you think of watching English series/movies on Netflix with subtitles in the target language. I am at around a B1 level in French and I’ve found this technique very helpful with better expressing myself by learning new words and phrases.

Prezioso Professore, I need your help! I'm going to teach to my students the "Figure retoriche". Many students of mine are English speakers... In your experience is more common to say "Rethorical device" or "figure of speech"? I really bless you ❤️🌟🙏🏻
