Canada changes its official 'Citizenship Oath' #shorts

Trudeau has gotten the parliament to approve a new oath of citizenship for immigrants that recognizes indigenous treaty rights in the constitution for the first time. But does this make sense?

Feels more like lip service, rather than, you know, actually showing respect and supporting Indigenous people. Like a reminder “Hey remember how the government cares about the Indigenous peoples of Canada! It’s in the oath, which means we totally do!”

There are other rights they could have mentioned that the Constitution recognizes, but this particular addition seems more of a PR move by the government, especially at this time.

When a British friend of mine was becoming a Canadian citizen, he simultaneously became much more British than he used to be because only since then he committed to bearing true allegiance to the Queen.

This oath is one hand very conservative, what with all of the "true allegiance to her majesty and her heirs" and fake-progressive, with the shoe-horning of the Aboriginal people. True Centrism Achieved

That was really shoe horned in there. Swearing to observe the laws of Canada already covers those treaties. That addition is more appropriate in an oath of office than new citizens

I recently had to analyze the oaths for Canada, the UK, and Australia for university (prior to the addition), and Canada's is by far the most patriotic towards the British monarchy, which I found a bit bizarre (I'm a Canadian living in the UK)

Pledging to uphold Canadian traffic laws will be more important than a citizen’s new obligations to the natives of Canada…whatever those on a personal level are supposed to be.

I mean, are new Canadians also supposed to uphold the training of Chinese soldiers on their soil, or just those specific treaties for whatever reason?

As a Metis person I do find it weird that they included that section about aboriginal people. I just dont see why its important to make new Canadians promise to care about our issues when they have so many of their own issues.

I think it would be cool to stick a bit of the Canadian Food Guide in there

I like that you presented the new oath before identifying which part was added, so people who have never heard any version of it before (which I assume is most of us) can evaluate it on its own terms without status quo bias. But, the new part still stuck out like a sore thumb.
