Christian Orthodox here. I say to anyone who wants to follow Jesus Christ look into the Eastern Orthodox church.
Even if you already are a christian buy yourself a greek orthodox study bible ( english ) and follow Frs. Josiah Trenham or Paul Truebenbach both american orthodox priests.

Above all, I respect the work of Mel Gibson. I have to admit that it was Passion that deeply shook me when I saw him, and that I have looked at the Catholic faith with different eyes since then. I'm not a believer. I am nominally a Muslim, but I am not a practical believer, the Gnostic view of God is much closer to me. Still, I have to admit that I believe Mel when he shares his concerns about the Church publicly like this. In the end, I'm not sure anything can go back to the way it was before. Who knows, maybe something much better will come out of all this. Sincere greetings

It is heart warming to hear Mel Gibson defend some of these priests. There is a saying that Orthodox priests should be concilliatory. Mar Mari Emmanuel, Andrey Kuraev and others were outspoken but also much loved. Their outreach is absolutely evident from what happened to Mar Mari Emmanuel earlier this summer. We should keep the balance, we should be as much as possible concilliatory but we also need some voices of broader appeal like them. At the same time, many of the bishops have a very inflated image of themselves and take it upon themselves to act without humility, not always representing the Church as a whole. All of us are the Church, it is not just the few bishops sitting in a council behind closed doors, that is arrogance. Mar Mari Emmanuel has been much loved and has a reach that presently few other Orthodox priests have. The same could be said for Andrey Kuraev, an academic and ordained priest who was striken off by a Russian Council. If outspokedness was their only failing, then I hope most certainly among many other Orthodox Christians that another Orthodox Church can take them in its arms.
