Introduction to Nagios-based Monitoring

This online course provides an overview of the main features offered by Nagios. It first introduces the key concepts (coloured area concept, shadowed states, service checks) of Nagios and describes the underlying functional architecture. It then explains how Nagios determines status information about hosts and services using periodic normal and retry checks. It also shows how this information can be sent to administrative contacts based on alerts using an advanced notification system, or can be directly accessed through the web interface. In addition, it details the configuration parameters and the execution of checks within Nagios.

Good overview of what is Nagios and its architecture! Accent is a bit difficult to follow.

Even 10 years later, setup of Nagios is teh most terrible experience i had. Can't even get the webserver setup right, as nobody is really explaining what is going on.
I even got so far to download compile and run the C code under the QtCreator debugger. It's just 90k lines of C code, so a modern Nagios Core rewrite should be not more then a few thousands of lines in ruby. Why the fuck are we using this old code?
