In this video, I’ll guide you through the process of pairing my vintage 85mm portrait lens from 1988, the classic Soviet-made Jupiter-9 85mm f/2.0 M42 mount lens, with my L-mount Blackmagic Design PYXIS 6K Camera. This iconic lens is known for its soft, dreamy bokeh, which has made it a favorite among portrait photographers and vintage lens enthusiasts. Manufactured in the Soviet Union in 1988 this lens came from the Lytkarino Optical Glass Factory (LZOS) Лыткаринский завод оптического стекла) . This factory was one of the premier producers of high-quality optics in the Soviet era, and its legacy continues to be celebrated by collectors and filmmakers around the world.
The Jupiter-9 has its roots in pre-World War II lens designs, particularly inspired by the Zeiss Sonnar formula. Following the war, Soviet engineers adapted and refined the design, resulting in the Jupiter-9. The lens features 7 elements in 3 groups, as well as 15 blades which helps it to produce very smooth bokeh and all f stops while maintaining the Sonnar-like optical characteristics that emphasize a smooth, creamy background blur and pleasing rendering for portrait work. Its maximum aperture of f/2.0 offers excellent subject isolation, and it can produce striking images even in low light conditions.
In this studio-based test, I’ll evaluate how well this classic lens performs when paired with modern digital cinema technology. We’ll look at sharpness, close focus capabilities, flaring characteristics, and minimum focus distance performance across several apertures: f/2, f/2.8, f/4, and f/5.6. Whether you’re a fan of vintage optics or curious about pairing legacy glass with modern cameras, this test should provide valuable insights into the Jupiter-9’s timeless appeal and practical applications in contemporary filmmaking.
