I love how Simon assumes we'd give him guff over a statement such as "Our sun is unusually hot." Know your audience indeed.🤣

"high cost of sexual reproduction"

Now there is an understatement.

Blinkist reminds me every time of Blinkin from Robin Hood: Men in Tights.

Things Scientists Still Can't Fully Explain: Is there one Simon Whistler or are there many Simon Whistlers in several parallel universes in order to make an insane amount of vastly different videos? There is the Blaze universe, there is the Criminalist universe, there is the Megaprojects universe... And there is of course the question we all want to know! WHERE IS

I'm surprised sleep didn't make the list... last I heard it was still a complete mystery as to why creatures evolved the need to sleep, what purpose it serves and why different animals require different amounts. We understand the side-effects of not sleeping, but we also don't fully understand what causes them.

After my TBI, I had partial amnesia... though I didn't really 'know' that at first. There was a 6 week long "50 First Dates" kind of phase, and I wrote no new memories in that time, so people just have to tell me about things I said/did.
But what you said about understanding how we write memories but how complex retrieval is, by comparison, got me thinking about 'how' I've retrieved the memories I did manage to retain, and I'm compiling the data of my own experience and my experiments (successes and not-so-successes) into a book maybe.
But from my experience, the key to memory retrieval is for it to have a strong physical/tactile/action-ary component. Smells and music are the two most obvious, but also physical motion-based tasks (washing dishes, playing an instrument, sewing) that the person engaged in before the brain injury. A perfume, a seasoning, an acapella tune. Our subconscious stores the HELL out of sensory data, and plugging straight into 'sensation' bypasses the confusion of 'trying' to remember.
IDK if that's useful to anybody--I just get excited when it comes up in conversation I guess :)

Makes me remember when I tried to make an obvious statement like "...wetter then water." only to be challenged by my chemist friend.

Laughter is the opposite of a scream.
It's safety. It's the all-clear.
A relaxed exhalation.

Most flowers need bees. We would not see a mass expansion of the variety of flowers without those bees surviving in many different climates.

Hydrogen bonding is why water molecules adhere together so strongly. No real mystery there.

Bipedalism: our distant ancestors lived in grasslands (savannas). These grasses grow tall enough that those ancestors needed to stand up on two legs occasionally to see over the top of the grass. See the lion? Go the other way and survive. Get better and better at standing up on two legs enhances your survival and so this would be naturally selected for.

Ah, the REAL mystery to memories is how some memories are apparently transferred /encoded in the genes of some creatures, as the young know where to go (migrate), or what predators to fear without ever being “told” or shown. Which means there is a lot about genetics we’ve barely scratched the surface to understand

scientists are going to have a long time unravelling the mystery of that fifth fundemental force of physics
